Macho man Sunny Deol has a passion for clicking pictures. Be it people or picturesque locales, the actor keeps busy with his camera whenever he goes outdoors.
As producer Akshay Bajaj (Om Films) discovered while shooting for Naksha in Manali. The film has been directed by his brother Sachin and also stars Jackie Shroff, Sameera Reddy and Viveik Oberoi. Gizmo freak.
When Akshay saw Sunny clicking away on his camera he thought it was just another hobby.
"We shot in Manali, Panchgani, New Zealand and Thailand, but it was on the second schedule in Manali that I noticed Sunny taking lots of pictures on Rohtang Pass. It's one of the highest snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas. I saw the kind of equipment Sunny was carrying and asked him about it.
He replied that photography had always been a passion with him ever since he was a child and he has a huge collection of photographs he has taken over the years. I'd heard about his love for cars, but during Naksha I discovered his passion for cameras and electronic equipment. Sometimes, Sunny shoots pictures himself or his boy shoots if Sunny is giving a shot."
Bajaj reveals that Sunny is not an amateur photographer.
His knowledge of photography as well as equipment is extensive, "Sunny is one of the most techno-savvy actors.
His cameras are not those small digital ones, but the latest ones used by professionals, complete with tripod et al.
Sunny knows all about lenses and wide-angle shots. He is a complete gadget freak controlled by his machines," grins Akshay.
What a stunt!
Akshay is also all praise for Sunny's work in Naksha.
"Sunny is a daredevil. For an action scene, which needed Sunny to jump down a waterfall, and we had arranged for duplicates. But Sunny told me he wanted to do the stunt himself. He told us, 'Why should these dudes have all the fun? I want to do it myself.'
From going river rafting down Kayatuna River in New Zealand to jumping off 150 ft cliff in Mahabaleshwar, Sunny has shot his stunts himself. He has also taken some lovely pictures of when they went rafting."
Naksha is an adventure drama where Sunny, Sameera and Viveik stumble upon a map that leads them to a casket with hidden treasure.
Says Akshay, "It's in the genre of Indiana Jones with lots of mysterious elements and mythology."
Sameera plays a travel show hostess and has a lean and sexy
Viveik performed risky stunts himself, some of which included jumping through a ring of fire and diving under a bullock cart in motion.
Sunny went to Thailand to shoot a special fight sequence with Thai fighters. Jackie plays an evil archaeologist.
The underwater sequences have been shot by Murray Milne (Lord of the Rings).
Naksha releases on September 8.
