Wearing
a
Bikini
onscreen
was
once
upon
a
time
considered
a
taboo,
as
most
actresses
wished
to
confirm
to
the
image
of
a
'Sati
Savitri',
to
cater
to
the
likes
of
the
general
audience.
However,
there
have
been
plenty
of
heroines
since
time
immemorial
who
have
appeared
once
or
twice
in
a
bikini,
either
to
give
a
sagging
career
a
boost
or
to
launch
oneself
on
the
screen.
In
majority
of
the
cases
it
is
at
the
beginning
of
the
career,
or
when
the
beginning
has
not
been
that
significant;
and
in
a
few
stray
cases
it
has
been
at
the
middle
of
the
career
as
well.
One can cite many examples of well known celebrities who have appeared in bikinis for whatever reasons, few of them being Parveen Babi, Zeenat Aman, Dimple Kapadia, Sonam, Juhi Chawla, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai to name a few.
Aishwarya was seen in a bikini in Dhoom 2 whereas the more experienced veteran Zeenat Aman had done this with aplomb in Qurbani, Pukaar and Dostana. Even a song was written about her in the film Dostana - 'Bahut Khoobsoorat Jawan Ee Ladki Sadak Par Akeli Chali Jaa Rahi Thi'. Probably this is the only song picturised in bikini, in Hindi Films. There was a dialogue in the film as well, where Amitabh Bachchan (The male lead in the film) tells Zinnie Baby that people would not respect her if she went out in those kind of clothes, implying that the outfit would be a beating to a 'Sati Savitri' image which is what she should ideally portray. Parveen Babi had done it in Abdullah and to a partial extent in Shaan.
The most explosive debut performances in bikini that one can think of is of actress Sonam in Vijay. Madhuri Dixit had done it in Tezaab, and Dimple Kapadia in Zakhmi Sher and Sagar when she was on a come back trail. Juhi Chawla had applied the same strategy in Sultunat aka Karanme Kamaal Ke opposite Karan Kapoor, Chandni and Darr as well.
Among the female actresses of the past, the names that immediately come to mind is Sharmila Tagore in An Evening In Paris , Vyjantimala in Sangam, and Simi Garewal in Mera Naam Joker.
The hitch to be seen in a bikini among the heroines in earlier days could have something to do with the physical dimensions, which probably was not worth showcasing, and in some cases could be due to lesser exposure to the western norms. However, with health and physical fitness gaining priority, the actresses now are more confident in showing off their body onscreen. The quite visible manifestation is Bipasha Basu, and Vidya Balan (In Guru).
The time is slowly arriving in the industry where lead heroines wearing bikini will not raise eyebrows. So, let more bikinis bloom on the silver screen!
