Born as Banurekha Ganeshan, now known as Rekha is celebrating her 58th birthday today. She was 13 when she came to Mumbai from Madras (Chennai) to work in Bollywood. She started working at a very young age to support her family financially. No one had imagined then that this dark complexion and plump figured girl will be ruling the Hindi Film industry in the coming years.
Rekha was born in Chennai to Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli. Rekha's parents were not married. Her father enjoyed considerable success as an actor, though he never accepted Rekha during her childhood. This was the reason for a rift between her and her father.
In the early stage of her career, Rekha was heavily criticised for being overweight and dark. She was tagged as an ugly duckling because she looked unconventional as all actresses of her times were slimmer and fairer.

Rekha appeared as a child actress in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966). She made her debut as heroine in the successful Kannada film Goa dalli CID 999 with Rajkumar in 1969. Her first film as a lead actress in Bollywood was Sawan Bhadon (1970).
