Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, one of the most ambitious films by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, released in the year 1999, was one of the biggest blockbuster of the year. The film became the third highest grossing of all the Bollywood films of 1999 with Rs 32.5 crore. It fetched approximately Rs 11.1 crore at the international Box Office.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, based on Maitreyi Devi's Bengali novel 'Na Hanyate' was a love triangle between the characters of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. Aishwarya not only looked breathtakingly beautiful, she also acted brilliantly and fitted the role perfectly.
Aishwarya's pain and anger in being separated from the man she loved most, Salman Khan's frustration and intense love for his lady love and above all, Ajay Devgn's simplicity, honesty and calmness in dealing with the situation was a treat to watch. Sanjay Leela Bhansali showed utmost maturity in handling the subject, balancing all the three main characters of the film. In order to appeal to Bollywood moviegoers, Bhansali made sure that our beautiful lady returned to her husband and not her lover.
Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai's onscreen and even offscreen chemistry was the most talked about subject at that point of time. It of course worked in favour of the film and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam turned out to be a superhit.
