Interview: Commando Music Director Manan Shah

Manan Shah who is making his debut as a Music Director with Commando wants his work to speak for him. Manan Shah is just 25 and he says that it is like a victory for him that he got a chance to work in Commando. Oneindia reporter Sonika Mishra got an Exclusive interview of Manan Shah. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

How did you bag this movie Commando?

Dilip sir had narrated me the whole script. He had a different idea in his mind and believed that I could do it. I was assisting Pritam for a year. After assisting him and getting all the experience, I began composing my own music. Then I narrated my songs to Vipul and Dilip Sir. They loved my work and it was then I made a few 'hatke' songs and they selected few of them.

How are the songs of Commando different from the others?
Two songs of the film 'Lut Jawan' and 'Lena Dena' are very different. Very few action films have Punjabi songs and Commando is one of them. To bring some more drama and emotion, we have included a romantic track titled 'Saawan Bairy'.

When did you decide to become a music director?
I always dreamt of composing good music and wanted to become a musician. But I was not sure whether I could become a full fledged music director at the age of 25. Music directors usually start their career at 30 but I am just 25.

What did you do to make the music of Commando unique?
The lyrical content of Commando and its composition is different as it is totally a Live music. If you listen to the complete song 'Saawan Bairy', there is free flow of flute and Saarangi. I personally believe that live music creates a magic. In 'Lena Dena,' which is a Punjabi Song, we used a Shahnai and also used Dhuliki.

Why do you think that Commando will rock at the Box Office?
Commando has new talent and people will watch this movie. I am very happy about Vidyut and his previous movies. I became his fan after I watched Bollywood film Force and two other South Indian movies, in which he has done a fabulous job. Pooja Chopra has also done a great job in Commando. It's a good movie and people will love it.

What makes Commando different?
Commando is a pure action film and Vidyut's action is the USP of the film. There are 7-8 major fight scenes in the film that has Kalaripayattu. (Form of martial art well known in Kerala). Apart from that, there is romance, and negative shades as well. I hope everyone will love the film as it has everything. It is one kind of film in which two songs are based on hero and heroine, and the other two are based on a villain. 'Lena Dena' and 'Mungda' are item songs and both have negative shades - Just like how in Satya's 'Sapne Me Milti hai' was shot on a villian (Manoj Bajpai).

Is it true that you got this break just because you are a relative of Vipul Shah?
Everyone should have a mentor and the mentor is called as Godfather. I got this movie only because of my talent. Vipul Shah saw my efforts and then gave me the chance. He is very strict with me and never treated me as a mentor, Godfather or a relative. There is family relation, but when it comes to career, you definitely need a Godfather/Mentor. The way he handles every situation and helps me, he is very nice and co-operative.

How was your experience while working on Commando?
Working on this film was one kind of an experience. Working with seniors like Daler Mehndi and Sunidhi Chauhan is amazing. They had taken my songs to another level.

Any memorable moments that you can recall during the making of Commando?
(Laughing) We were recording the song 'Lena Dena' with Daler Mehndi in Delhi. He wanted me to narrate the whole song and I sang that song live over the phone. I sang in such high pitch that I was wondering how will he understand the song on phone. After listening to the whole track, he said that he will be doing it even if he's not paid. Then he came to Delhi with his entire gang and recorded the song. In three and half hour of recording, he gave me 400 best takes. I was confused as to which one is the best.

What are your forthcoming projects?
As of now I am waiting for the release of Commando and after the release of the movie, I will decide which project to choose. Yes, I am getting some proposals from the producers. As of now I am just concentrating on Commando.

Shouldn't you be branding yourself?
I want my work to speak. I want people to listen and enjoy my songs. That will be my biggest victory. I just want to brand my compositions.

What do you want to say to our readers?
All I would like to request people is to please go and watch the movie. Hope people like the way the music of the film is made and they love the film. It is releasing on 12th of April and I wish everyone will like the movie.
