Tridha Choudhury indulges in an exclusive chat with Filmibeat about her show Spotlight, slut-shaming, nepotism and more..

By Madhuri

'There's no light without darkness' says Tridha Choudhury when we ask her about her advice to girls who have starry dreams in their eyes and you just can't help yourself from marveling at her optimistic approach towards life.

For the unintiated who ain't into Bengali or South films or television, the actress is Vikram Bhatt's leading lady in his recently lauched web show 'Spotlight' on Viu (Video On Demand Service). Filmibeat recently indulged in an exclusive conversation with her. Read on to know what she had to say...

'Vikram Bhatt Thought I Would Be Apt To Play A Character Like Sana'

'Vikram Bhatt Thought I Would Be Apt To Play A Character Like Sana'

How did Spotlight come your way?

A. Vikram Sir (Vikram Bhatt) knew about me and got recommendation through friends. He had seen me in a couple of Bengali films. When he had Spotlight in his mind, he thought I would be apt to play a character like Sana. He pitched the project to me and narrated me the story. I loved it. Of course there was the casting person involved too in the process.

'I Am Very Determined Like Sana In Real Life'

'I Am Very Determined Like Sana In Real Life'

How similar is Tridha Choudhary to Sana Saniyal in real life?

A. I would say that both of us are very determined. What I loved about Sana is she has a lot of conviction and is very focused on what she does. It's not just about acting; it's about taking every decision in life.

If you had to imbibe one trait of Sana in real life, what would that be?

A. I like the fact that she has adapted well to the industry. At one point, she accepted her failures and went on to be pretty big star. I just hope I have that concentration and patience in real life.

'When You Are A Pageant Winner, Things Get A Tad Easier'

'When You Are A Pageant Winner, Things Get A Tad Easier'

While you were shooting, were there any scenes which reminded you of your initial days in the industry?

A. Spotlight is something which I haven't experienced. I would say I was lucky because my first step in the industry was patterned. When you are a pageant winner, things get a tad bit easier. I am stunned that this is a story of an ambitious person. I am not saying I haven't struggled.

There is a long way for me to go. I have just began my career. There was one particular scene where my character Sana arrives in a new city and seems to be lost. I recently shifted to Mumbai. Earlier I used to continuously shuttle between Mumbai and my hometown Kolkata for work. So yaa, a little bit of similarity of being lost in the big city.

'You Cannot Say You Are Loner If You Are Successful'

'You Cannot Say You Are Loner If You Are Successful'

There is an interesting line in the trailer which says 'There can be only one person under the Spotlight'. What's your take on it?

A. There can be two interpretations to this. For me, something like a spotlight or limelight basically comes with somebody who is been showcased in absolute priority.

One is that suppose if you are in a relationship with somebody so here it actually means you just prioritize your career or what you want. You cannot drag your personal life, affairs and all of that if you are a shining, reigning star. You cannot say you are loner if you are successful. I beg to differ. 'There can be only one person under the spotlight'- it means leave all your baggages behind and just be there shining without regret.

'Everything Comes With A Price'

'Everything Comes With A Price'

Your show talks about how fragile relationships are and how manipulative relationships and how manipulative people can be in the showbiz. Do you think success and fame is a double edged sword?

A. It's how you take it. It is good to be ambitious and determined. But don't let it come like a desperation in your life no matter what happens. People think it's okay to take that person for granted. It's like our heart is there with somebody but then we feel that if the relationship reports go public, people might have different opinion or somebody might hold me in a different light.

It's the opinion of the audience and people which bogs us down. The day you become successful, none of your matters stay private. Everybody would want to get a scoop of your personal life. Even in a condition where you just want your privacy. So everything comes at a price.

'Actors Don't Have A Very Happy Life All The Time'

'Actors Don't Have A Very Happy Life All The Time'

An actor's life is contantly under scrutiny, all thanks to the media and paparazzi. Could this be one of the reasons why they tend to be so closely guarded these days when it comes to their personal life or giving an opinion?

A. We need to guard our emotions. It's not about relationship or affair with somebody. It's the actual mental state of your mind. The paparazzi always wants something edgy even if it's a rumour or not even close to the fact. Once it's out in the media, nobody would really want to know whether it's true or false. So, it's good to confide in your near and dear ones. We are all humans at the end of the day. Actors don't have a very happy life all the time.

'If I Am Wearing A Swimwear On A Beach, I Would Like People To Really Not Give An Opinion About That'

'If I Am Wearing A Swimwear On A Beach, I Would Like People To Really Not Give An Opinion About That'

Social media is a boon today. But there's an ugly side to it as well with the rise of nasty comments and slut-shaming on the posts of celebrities. In fact, recently a couple of TV actresses openly slammed these haters. How you ever faced something like this?

A. I am very comfortable in my skin wearing a two-piece. I don't get this big tabboo that our society has on swimsuit. They think something like a two-piece is outrageous. I am not going against anybody's opinion and culture. I am just saying that if I am in a place where everybody else also share a similar vibe then I am doing that at my comfort and not to offend anybody so I think people really need to let go of this tabboo.

Obviously I cannot go to a discotheque wearing skimpy clothes and expect not to hear catcalls and things like that. That's the society where we live in. So probably we should dress according to the place. But when it comes to a place like a beach and if I am wearing a swimwear then I would like people to really not give an opinion about that.

If Kangana Has Made Some Comment About Something Which Is Very Personal To Her Then I Think We Should Leave It At That'

Your show Spotlight mainly revolves around Bollywood. Recently Kangana Ranaut sparked off a debate in the industry when she spoke about nepotism. What's your take on the N-word?

A. Frankly speaking I don't share enough knowledge about it. So, I wouldn't really comment much on that. I am sure with experience and life and its times, situations change for every person. So, if she has made some comment about something which is very personal to her, I think we should leave it at that and not dig it out further.

'It's Sad That Few People In The Indian Film Industry Share The Opinion That If An Actor Is Working For TV, The Person Cannot Be Projected The Same On The Silver Screen'.

'It's Sad That Few People In The Indian Film Industry Share The Opinion That If An Actor Is Working For TV, The Person Cannot Be Projected The Same On The Silver Screen'.

You did a TV show Dahleez which was quite popular. Weren't you tempted to take up more TV soaps?

It's sad that in the Indian film industry, few people share the opinion that if an actor is working for television, the person cannot be projected the same on the silver screen. For me things have been different because I started my work with films. I am still doing films down the South and in Bengal. I am not inclined towards television shows right away because of commitments. With time, people might see me again there.

You have dabbled with films, television and now a webisode. Which medium do you enjoy the most?

A. Being an actor you have to be comfortable in which medium you dabble with. If you are an actor you will be noted anywhere. If you have a fan-following and an audience they would anyway like to see in any medium. Yes, probably the reach of films definitely high because there is a theatrical release. It feels nice that people actually take out time with their family and make an extra efforts to go to the theatres to watch you. I think that's exactly why film actors hold a little more edge.

What's next on the platter?

I am doing a film down the South. It's going on the floors next month in Goa. Again, I am playing a very different character and quite challenging.

On the parting note, what advice would you like to give to girls who have starry dreams in their eyes and aspire to make it big in showbiz?

A. I am still not there where I want to be. All of us have this level on the pyramid. I think there's still some time for me to go there. Once I am there I should give you the answer. But yes, definitely a word of motivation I am always there to share. There will be days where there will be more of blue days and less of sunny days. So, you have live in every moment of those sunny days and look forward to good days ahead. There's no light without darkness. Don't give up and keep believing in yourself.

Meanwhile folks, do let us know your thoughts on this new show Spotlight on Viu.
