Shammi Kapoor Mumtaz: Renowned yesteryear actor Mumtaz, who is known for her iconic roles in Bollywood, quickly rose to stardom in the film industry. The veteran actress was one of the most sought-after actresses during her era.

It is a well-known fact that she was involved in a romantic relationship with legendary actor Shammi Kapoor, who had expressed his desire to marry her. However, Mumtaz declined Shammi's proposal for marriage.

On the occasion of the 92nd birth anniversary of Shammi Kapoor, let's take a look at why Mumtaz denied his marriage proposal.

Mumtaz rejected Shammi Kapoor's marriage proposal

Mumtaz and Shammi Kapoor's affair was the tak of the town. Mumtaz, in an old interview with The Times Of India, revealed the reason for refusing Shammi's proposal and added that he was genuinely in love with her. The veteran actress revealed that she was not ready to give up everything and settle down.

Further, adding that the Kapoor family was too strict about their 'bahus', Mumtaz stated, "I joined the industry at the age of 17. So, it was too early in my life to give up everything", she added. She even said that she had the responsibility of her family and wanted to make sure that they are kept well."

Mumtaz, in the same interview, went on to add that people could not believe that she rejected the Kashmir Ki Kali actor. Revealing that tehri fans were also stunned, she said, "Beginning mein believe hi nahi karte the ki Mumtaz can ever refuse Shammi Kapoor because who kaha the aur hum kaha the...zameen aasmaan ka farak tha."

"Toh logon ko doubt lagta tha. Us zamane mein bolte the ki ho hi nahi sakta. Ho hi nahi sakta ki Shammi ko Mumtaz refuse kare," she added.

Mumtaz on Shammi Kapoor doubting her intentions

Mumtazi also spoke about how Shammi Kapoor started to doubt her intentions after she refused him and accused her of never being in love with her. She said, "But, when I refused him, he started doubting ki nai tujhe heroine banna hai isiliye you don't want to marry me, you were never in love with me."

Well, after parting ways, Shammi Kapoor married Geeta Bali in 1955; however, he was left shattered after Bali's untimely death in 1965. He then remarried Neela Devi in 1969.

Mumtaz tied the knot with Indian-origin Ugandan businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974, and they have two daughters together. Natasha and Tanya.
