Reminiscing about his career best film Saaransh, Anupam Kher said that when he got to know that the filmmakers were planning to rope in Sanjeev Kumar for his role, he blasted Mahesh Bhatt and called him a fraud!
Saaransh (1985), directed by Mahesh Bhatt starring Anupam Kher and Rohini Hattangidi was one of the best films that Bollywood ever had. In fact, the film was India's official entry for the 1985 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Anupam Kher was only 28 when he did the role of a 60-plus retired headmaster BV Pradhan who along with his wife played by Rohini Hattangidi was struggling to come to0 terms with the death of his young son who got killed in a mugging incident in New York.
Walking past the memory lane, Anupam Kher said that he had worked on the character in Saaransh for almost eight months before the film rolled on. It was then that he heard the rumour that the producers wanted a famous celebrity to play the role and were thinking of roping in Sanjeev Kumar.
When he called Mahesh Bhatt, he confirmed the news and offered him the role of the other old man. Anupam Kher was so devastated that he decided to leave the city for good. When he stopped by Mahesh Bhatt's house, he blasted Bhatt for doing this to me. Anupam Kher said, "I only howled, calling him a fraud and an imposter for doing this to me. Mahesh's answer was to pick up the phone and tell the Barjatyas of Rajshri Productions that he had decided to make Saaransh only with Anupam. And if they opted out, he would get NFDC to produce the film for him."
Well, the rest of it is history!
