Fan Critics Review

In 1993, Shahrukh Khan had played the negative character of an obsessive lover in Darr and we still can't forget his terrific acting in the film, (especially that K..K..K..Kiran). However, since a few years, SRK was doing only romantic-comedy films, which only got average reviews from the critics! After a long hiatus, Shahrukh Khan is back with a 'hatke' film, i.e., Fan and let's see, what this movie has in store for all of us. How far Gaurav goes with his obsession and what mess he creates in Aryan Khanna's life is for you to find out. This gripping thriller will leave you wondering on whom to sympathise; the obsessed fan who feels betrayed when his idol doesn't return his affection or the Superstar, who can't handle the fan's madness as he is a human first! Coming to Shahrukh Khan's performance, he has pulled off both the characters so effortlessly that at one point you will feel like standing up and clapping for the actor. We have specially mention Gaurav here. Right from his body language, to his looks and typical 'Delhi' accent, SRK has given complete justice to the role and perfect would be a small word to describe his acting in this film (like, literally)! No matter, whether you are a Shahrukh Khan Fan or not, this film is surely a must watch. There are a few flaws but don't worry at all! Shahrukh Khan's 'double dhamaka' is totally a paisa-vasool and you can easily give it a shot, that too, along with your full family!

Shah Rukh Khan has given another extraordinary performance in this flick. The movie revolves completely around the two characters and SRK just nails them like a BOSS. The plot of the movie is well drafted for each kind of audience. It just naturally leads to the story that there is one ideal in everyone’s life and respecting emotions of fans is the ideal’s lifetime achievement. We can say that SRK’s movie is one man show and the 40-year-old just acted like a 19-year-old kid and it’s a must must watch for the 90s and 80s kids. On the whole, Fan is a different film, and if you miss it, it’s your bad. So go for it and watch it this weekend.

Shah Rukh Khan in a song-less, romance-less, heroine-less movie directed by the poet of middle-class Maneesh Sharma seems like a perfect recipe for a hatke film. I watched the film in happy anticipation and enjoyed it too. The first 30 minutes at least. Gaurav is the imposter who sets out to tarnish Aryan Khanna’s image. His devious plans, no matter how improbable, are delicious. You want to know what his next move would be. But the sequences lead to rather extreme irrational decisions taken by Aryan. Gaurav’s bad behaviour is caught on camera and misread as superstar’s to disgrace him. Wait, the camera also catches Aryan at another location. Logic would prompt to reveal the footage and clear the air, right? Wrong. It’s a Hindi film. Shah Rukh Khan gives a decent performance. The starry twinkle in Gaurav’s eyes when he first sees Aryan Khanna, the excitement in his voice when he first speaks to him, makes you go all 'Aww'. Gaurav is still the easier part to play. Aryan Khanna is the trickier one. They have used his real life footage, gone into his personal space. How do you disengage and distance yourself when you play a character loosely based on your life? SRK keeps it subtle, however, I wish Aryan’s stubbornness and arrogance were further explored, both in writing and acting.

From gleefully collecting, and pasting photo-collages of their heroes/heroines on their walls to writing fan mails in their own blood, to getting their stars (names and, even faces) tattooed on themselves, they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and temperaments. While most fans gleefully surrender to an obscure life, away from the spotlight, there are a few, who will taunt, tease and torture till their adoration is validated. Gaurav Chandna belongs to that rare breed, where rejection takes a far more sinister tone. There's very little of Shah Rukh's influence on Gaurav, and that's refreshingly remarkable on the actor's and director's part. A masterstroke for an actor, who had almost forgotten to challenge himself. While the twisted facial features and thin body frame helped him to tackle Gaurav, Shah Rukh flaunts his acting chops when he shifts personalities without trouble. A moment when he turns into Aryan while locked down in a deep dark cell, just to remind his star of his worth is a class-act. Or, when he gleefully screams out his love for Aryan as the star blindly waves out to the crowd is spectacular. It’s an intriguing journey that Manish Sharma weaves, but one that, unfortunately, doesn’t end well.

When you play a Bollywood matinee idol in a film, there’s a danger of it being an exercise in self-indulgence, but the thriller Fan doesn’t fall into that trap. Having said that, Fan is definitely watchable. It’s engaging to watch a powerful actor and his seemingly powerless admirer indulge in a twisted battle of wills. The action scenes towards the climax are long, but well-executed. Watch this if you are a die-hard fan of Khan, but don’t expect an unpredictable thriller. The key here is to manage your expectations and you will walk home smiling at having seen an engaging drama about a stupid fan and a faultless superstar.
