After having seen endless love stories on youth, watching a mature love story like Listen Amaya is like a breath of fresh air. And if the movie marks the return of the unforgettable Farooq Sheikh-Deepti Naval pair after over two decades, then one can be sure about the fact that the movie will have some power packed scenes and performances.
Mrs Leela Krishnamoorthy (Deepti Naval), who is a middle aged widow, runs a library cum coffee shop. Amaya is Leela's only child and is a quick witted and open minded writer. From college kids to couples all love to spend time at Leela's 'Book A Coffee'. Amongst the regulars, here is Jayant Sinha (Farooq Sheikh). Jayant Sinha is 60 years old retired man and is passionate about his photography.
Jayant finds love, friendship and companionship in Leela. And soon Leela also falls in love once again, expecting that Amaya is an open minded girl and will respect her mother's decision. But their world comes crashing down when Amaya disapproves of their relationship.
Performances The romance that Deepti Naval and Farooq Sheikh depict on screen even today is very rare to find in recent films. Their expression, timings and chemistry are unbeatable. While Swara Bhaskar is the perfect choice for the role of Amaya, her role is so convincing in the movie that when she acts as an immature, mean and grumpy daughter you actually feel like slapping her.
Kudos to Avinash Kumar Singh for handling such a sensitive topic so brilliantly. The movie is neither too preachy nor too over dramatised.
The only negative thing about the movie is its length but you can surely overlook that as the movie has much more to offer. It's a contemporary, mature story about relationships and family. And if you have grown up admiring Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval's on-screen romance then you surely can't afford to miss this one.
