Mumbai (UNI): Still high on the success of his English play Mad About Money, director Mahesh Dattani has gone a step further and brought out its Hindi version, to open for public on August 15. A preview of the Hindi version, enacted by Paintal, Smita Jaykar, Suchitra Pillai, Deepika Amin and Pushkar Shrotri - was held at a theatre here yesterday where the artists performed some gripping scenes from the play.
On his reaction to the play, Dattani said, ''I am really overwhelmed at the response. The audience not only appreciated the comedy, but also the drama with equal enthusiasm.'' Rated as one of India's best and most serious contemporary playwrights in English' by the International Herald Tribune, Dattani made his debut in Mumbai theatre in February this year with Mad About Money, which received both critical and popular acclaim. Dattani is also the recipient of the prestigious Central Sahitya Akademi award in 1998.
Mad About Money is a light comic drama about human relationships in this life and the after life, and has already had an uninterrupted run. The story revolves around the Mehta family and how its senior most person - Hasmukhbhai - tries to control the entire family even from his grave...thus, bringing in some hilarious situations and outcomes.
Expressing his views on the Hindi version of the play, producer Ashvin Gidwani said, ''I am extremely thrilled at the fantastic response this play has received since inception. It is an amalgamation of emotion and comedy and is a different play for the entire spectrum of theatre lovers.'' He said he also intends to stage the play's Hindi version in in Dubai, London, New York, Los Angeles and Johannesburg.
