"The book marks 50 years of my life," said Ali, "It was written three years back and I cannot express the response I got for it." Ali went onto speak of the how the book came into being. "It was something that I had never imagined. I woke up at three in the morning and started writing it. After I completed it my friend took up the responsibility to get it published. He started a printing press just to get the book published."
And this his friend was not the book's only fan. "M.F. Hussain was so impressed by the book that he painted the cover for it in one night. The late Sunil Dutt said that the book should be released in a big way so he himself organized a big function. It was attended by all the bigwigs of Bollywood. The Marathi version of the book is going to be launched within the next 10 days as well."
Speaking about the book being made into a film, he said that it will mostly be directed by Sangeeth and Santosh Sivan's younger brother Sanjeev Sivan. Talks are on with Irrfan Khan to enact the main character's role of Ali himself. Tabu has been approached to play the author's mother though nothing has been finalized as yet. Apparently, a Hollywood scriptwriter has been assigned to write the screenplay for the film.
This casting is on the producer's part, but who does Ali Peter John feel would have been ideal to play his role in the film? "If Anupam Kher was younger then he would have suited it properly. But I definitely would want someone of his caliber."
