Nandita bags an award for <i>Maati Maay</i>

Palekar's
bi-lingual
(Marathi
and
English)
film
Maati
Maay.
Based
on
the
short
story
Baayen
by
Mahasweta
Devi,
the
film
is
about
the
life
of
a
gravekeeper
from
rural
Maharashtra.
Nandita
Das
plays
the
grave-keeper
in
the
film
and
Atul
Kulkarni
is
her
husband.
Though
the
film
didn't
do
well
in
India,
Nandita
has
won
the
V
Shantaram
Award
for
her
performance
in
the
film.
Chaintanya Shantaram, the grandson of V Shantaram, has started the V Shantaram Award for Marathi Cinema, in the memory of the legendary filmmaker. The jury of the awards comprising of respected Marathi media persons decided to honour Nandita for her performance in the Marathi film Maati Maay. Unfortunately, Nandita couldn't attend the ceremony as she is shooting abroad. But she will surely make up for it when she returns, says Chaitanya.
Some of Nandita's upcoming films include Santosh Sivan's Keral, Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked and Deepa Mehta's Kamagata Maru.
