Last year, Nandita Das starred in Chitra Palekar's bi-lingual (Marathi and English) film Maati Maay. Based on the short story Baayen by Mahasweta Devi, the film is about the life of a gravekeeper from rural Maharashtra. Nandita Das plays the grave-keeper in the film and Atul Kulkarni is her husband. Though the film didn't do well in India, Nandita has won the V Shantaram Award for her performance in the film.

Chaintanya Shantaram, the grandson of V Shantaram, has started the V Shantaram Award for Marathi Cinema, in the memory of the legendary filmmaker. The jury of the awards comprising of respected Marathi media persons decided to honour Nandita for her performance in the Marathi film Maati Maay. Unfortunately, Nandita couldn't attend the ceremony as she is shooting abroad. But she will surely make up for it when she returns, says Chaitanya.

Some of Nandita's upcoming films include Santosh Sivan's Keral, Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked and Deepa Mehta's Kamagata Maru.
