Last night, Vipul Shah and Akshay Kumar threw a joint party at Taj Lands End in Bandra. The party was a two-pronged decision and hastily organised at short notice. Apart from the success of SIK, the team was also celebrating India's first gold for an individual Abhinav Singh Bindra for winning the men's 10 m air rifle in shooting.
Says a source, "Vipul and Akshay were discussing whether to have a success party on Monday or Wednesday (as more collection figures come in) but Bindra took the decision out of their hands. Akshay is a sports fan and he is ecstatic that after all these years India has finally got an individual Gold medal at the Olympics.
His reaction was 'Man! An Olympic gold medal, this is no less than the cricket World Cup.' He was very excited that a sardar from Chandigarh won an Olympic gold at a time when his film Singh Is Kinng was propagating the valour and strength of Sikhs all over the world." The word was driven more by the fact that all through the day, Abhinav's's father, AS Bindra, kept reiterating that 'This proves that Singh Is King' in the media."
Vipul Shah says, "The film is setting so many records that we decided on Saturday itself to have a party. Few people suggested Monday and a few were saying Wednesday as we'd have more time to prepare. But yesterday, when I was speaking to Akshay, he talked about Bindra's gold medal and said that we must have the party on the same day. Apart from celebrating Singh is Kinng's success, we will also celebrate Abhinav Bindra's stupendous success." A dholwala from Punjab had been called to play at the party. Yes, there was a lot of bhangra.
