Aarakshan lands up in political fiasco

By Raymond Ronamai

The much-hyped film, Aarakshan is in trouble, as the Republican Party of India (RPI) has threatened to ban the film in Maharashtra, alleging that it is anti-dalit. RPI chief Ramdas Athavale said that his party will not allow the screening of the film in the state if the makers of the film do not change anti-dalit theme.

RPI alleged that the tries to divide Dalits and the others. The party's warning came after the National Commission of Scheduled Castes (NCSC) termed the film as anti-dalit and asked producer Prakash Jha to screen it to a panel before its release on August 12. The special screening has not taken place yet. Athavale said that his party would protest the screening of the film is it promotes anti-dalit message.

Aarakshan deals with reservations in the Indian education system. It features Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles.
