Actress
Priyanka
Chopra
and
actor
Rahul
Bose
have
taken
the
lead
to
spread
awareness
about
initiatives
that
people
can
take
to
green
the
planet.
The
actors
feature
in
a
new
video
released
by
the
United
Nations,
ahead
of
World
Environment
Day
on
June
5.
This
new
video
urges
individuals,
groups,
families,
schools
and
communities
to
post
the
details
of
various
green
activities
they
undertake
on
the
site
www.wedchallenge.org/india.
A
statement
issued
by
UN
read,
“And
for
Priyanka
and
Rahul,
this
is
where
the
battle
lines
get
drawn.
When
registering
a
green
activity
on
the
site,
people
will
have
the
opportunity
to
pledge
their
activity
to
either
one
celebrity
or
the
other."
While
Priyanka
has
pledged
to
plant
a
tree
for
every
WED
activity
registered
in
her
name,
Rahul
has
pledged
to
plant
two.
"Whether
it's
switching
from
plastic
bags
to
cloth
bags,
car-pooling
with
colleagues
or
organizing
a
tree-planting
day,
WED
activities
can
be
big,
small,
local,
international,
noisy,
quiet...just
as
long
as
they're
green," says
the
statement.
"When
the
votes
are
counted
on
June
5,
the
result
will
be
a
new
forest
inaugurated
by
the
winner
leaving
a
lasting
green
legacy
from
the
local
WED
community," said
a
UN
official.
This
is
the
first
time
that
India
has
been
declared
as
the
host
nation
by
United
Nations
for
Environment
Day
2011.
This
is
a
worldwide
celebration
with
major
events
planned
in
the
country.
This
year's
WED
theme
is
''Forests:
Nature
at
Your
Service'',
which
celebrates
the
multitude
of
services
providing
clean
air,
housing
rich
biodiversity,
supplying
water
performed
by
the
world's
forests.
