By

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar will be given the maiden National Yash Chopra Memorial Award. Each year the award will be given to an outstanding film personality. The award is instituted by Reddy-led TSR Foundation.

Industrialist-politician T Subbarami Reddy, producer of Hindi movies like Vijay, Chandni and Lamhe, announced the award in memory of late filmmaker Yash Chopra. The legendary singer will be the first person to receive this award in Yash Chopra's memory. "In the first year we are giving this to Lata Mangeshkar for her immense contribution to cinema. She was very close to Yashji and she has sung for almost all his films," said Subbarami Reddy, a Congress leader.

"The award commemorates Yash Chopra's contribution to cinema. We were very close friends. He was a very good human being and a talented filmmaker," he added.

The award ceremony is likely to take place on October 21 every year because the Bollywood icon died on the same day in 2012. There will be a distinguished jury consisting of Hindi film personalities including Hema Malini, Simi Garewal and Anil Kapoor selected the winner.

As a jury member, Hema Malini spoke highly of Yash Chopra. She said that she felt lucky to have been directed by Chopra in four films. She also mentioned that the legendary directory portrayed heroines beautifully in his films.
