Karan Johar, who successfully made a comedy film titled Dostana in 2008, was widely accepted by the audiences for its breakthrough into new territory in Bollywood for its funny homosexual theme. However the plot of the movie was not really homosexual as Abhishek Bachchan & John Abraham only pretended to be gays to win over Priyanka Chopra.
Karan Johar, who has joined the team of an upcoming movie, Aligarh, which talks about homosexuality in India. The movie, is very different and stands apart from other mainstream films in the country.
Amrita Arora and Isha Koppikar played the role of two lesbians in the movie Girlfriend. The film released in 2004.
Kareena Kapoor In Heroine
Kareena Kapoor who starred in Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine, had a lesbian scene with Shabana Goswami. However nothing explicit was shown on-screen and was left to the audiences imagination.

Even in the movie Ragini MMS 2, they were lesbian characters in its theme.
Madhuri Dixit In Dedh Ishqiya
Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi had a song sequence which was of a lesbian kind. However the filmmakers made the scene very maturely without any vulgarity.
Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das received a lot of flak for playing the roles of lesbians in the movie, Fire.
Karan Johar's Dostana, had a very funny theme on homosexuality. The movie was a hit and was something new in Bollywood.

Now would the top Khan's of Bollywood play the role of gays in their upcoming movie? Only the actors have to answer this.
Aligarh, starring Manoj Bajpai and Rajkummar Rao is all set to hit the theatres in Ferbuary 26, 2016.
During the promotions of Aligarh, Karan Johar says actors such as Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan would not mind acting in a homosexual themed movie if the story, plot and script is right & gripping.
Karan Johar was quoted as saying,
"Yes actors are cautious about doing such films. But I hope that superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman and Aamir for that matter will totally engage with the film like this. They will sure breakthrough cinematically."
In other words, Karan Johar says even the top Khan's of Bollywood need "breakthrough" and should do something different from their routine brand of cinema and start experimenting with newer roles.
Now would Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan really accept such roles, is best left for these respective actors to decide.
Coming back to Aligarh, the movie stars Manoj Bajpai, and is based on a true story of a man named, Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras.
Manoj Bajpai, who plays the role of Dr. Siras, was suspended from his job for being homosexual and also died under mysterious circumstances. Aligarh, also stars the Queen actor, Rajkummar Rao, who plays the role of a journalist.
Aligarh, is all set to be released on February 26, 2016.
