During the In Memoriam schedule at the Oscars 2017, The Academy paid homage to the lost icons of Hollywood and it was both surprising and heartening to see legendary Indian actor Om Puri being remembered and his name and picture flashed across the screen to show respect to the departed actor. The move was applauded by many Indians on social media for the gesture.
While quite a lot of people praised it, some were disappointed that Bollywood awards had ignored the legendary actor and didn't even mention his name during the recent award shows. Nawazuddin Siddiqui took to Twitter and slammed B-town awards by saying, "@TheAcademy #Oscars paid homage 2 late #OmPuri, But in #bollywood award functions nobody converse single word for his contribution... SHAME."
Om Puri breathed his last on January 6, 2017 at the age of 66 due to a major cardiac arrest at his residence right after he returned from a shoot. His death shocked the film industry and everyone poured in their condolences. It's sad to see that Bollywood awards didn't even show his life story, name or picture and directly took the glitz and glamour route.
Kudos to The Academy for remembering the late Om Puri and strengthening the Bollywood-Hollywood bond. Check out Nawazuddin Siddiqui's tweet below slamming the Bollywood awards...
