The Shaukeens Movie Review: Head Ache

Rating:
2.0/5

Shaukeen, the original cult classic which was released in 1982 was written and directed by Basu Chatterjee. Director Abhishek Sharma has taken the same subject and changed it to modern day adaptation and The Shaukeens was born.

Cast: Lisa Hayson, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra

Director: Abhishek Sharma

Music: Yo Yo Honey Singh, Arko Mukherjee, Hard Kaur & Vikram Negi

Story:

The Shaukeens has three lecherous old men (played by Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra) who decides to take a break from their routine boring life to enjoy. The trio lands up in Mauritius from Delhi and gets into hilarious situations with hot chick (read dumb) Ahana (Lisa Haydon). Ahana is a die hard fan of Akshay Kumar. The lecherous trio tries to impress and get lucky with her.

Akshay Kumar is playing the role originally played by Mithun Chakraborty, and he plays as himself for the first time. However, the actor says that his character as an alcoholic superstar is not a true reflection of his life.

What happens after they meet Ahana forms the crux of the story. To know the full story wait and watch it on big screen.

Lisa Haydon has come back again after her stellar performance in Queen. She is the main lead in The Shaukeens. If new age men who wants to be so Yo and talking about S** is so cool, then The Shaukeens is for you. It is so blatantly portrayed by the director. The men are so lecherous that they end joining a gym just to look at the curvaceous instructor. The three lecherous characters played by Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Piyush Mishra have done just as asked.

Anupam Kher (Lalli) a sadly married man, Annu Kapoor (KD) and Piyush Mishra (Pinky) a widower are so desperate to have fun (read to have s**) that they end up in Mauritius. Lisa owns the villa that they stay. The three men and their utter non sensical way to impress Lisa by groping and cheap ways of touching Lisa is not so enjoyable.

Don't know what director Abhishek had thought when he gave this film. The movie is not sleazy but can be enjoyed with family is just not believable. Akshay Kumar who plays as himself goes on to say to those men that, “Men are like dogs, the sight of a woman makes their tongues wag and eyes bulge" is not acceptable.

They have portrayed women only as a sex symbol. If a grown up woman like Lisa who claims herself as Gypsy can't understand that, three and not just one, men are groping and passing lewd comments about her, then where does one have to leave the brain while watching this film is a big question.

The breath-taking locales of Mauritius is the only respite. Cameos by Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Suniel Shetty are something to watch out for. Chaudhary Amalendu work on the camera is just awesome.

Although, the songs refuse to stick in the mind, music is not too bad. Yo Yo Honey Singh has given a peppy number yet another time.

"Tigmanshu and I just wanted to give Akshay a quirk. He plays himself in the film but there is also a fictional side. We featured the song Alcoholic on him because everyone knows he's a teetotaller. The contrast is funny," says director Abhishek Sharma.

"I recommended her name to the producer and everyone including Akshay agreed that she's brilliant. Shraddha Kapoor being considered is a rumour. And Nargis Fakhri could not do it because she was doing a Hollywood film," Abhishek says.

"Because I liked his performance in Happy New Year. On a serious note, Akshay Kumar is playing himself, so people who are related to him do come in somewhere in his world. That's why Abhishek, Kareena Kapoor and Sunil Shetty have also been featured," Abhishek adds.
