Drew Barrymore-Hollywood Powerhouse

By By: Sunil Noronha

Drew Barrymore was born on the 22nd of February 1975. Born of acting royalty, she was induced to the acting field from the very beginning. Her father was John Barrymore and mother, Jaid Barrymore. John Barrymore being her father dug the acting lineage even deeper with his father being acting great John Barrymore and his mother, Dolores Costello. Not only in blood was she set deep in the industry, her very own godfather was the man himself, Steven Spielberg. Her foray into the film industry was in a commercial for Gainesburger Puppy Food. The follow up role was a big step into the mega flick ET: The Extra-Terrestial, which put her face on the world scene. She got this role after she auditioned for Poltergeist. She didn't do well enough to get herself the role but the director/auditioner Steven Spielberg kept her in mind and landed her a role in ET as the little Gertie. Followed were appearances at SNL (she was the youngest to ever host it) and The Tonight Show-all this before she was nine. Soon the pressure got to her and she succumbed to drugs and alcohol to relieve her of the pressure. She was admitted to a rehabilitation centre to recover from drugs and alcohol abuse. Her recovery spurned an autobiography titled Little Girl Lost.

Many more movies came for her after this and her acting career flourished. She eventually left school for Hollywood. One year after she became a major, she got married to Jeremy Thomas but got divorced after just three months. Magazine covers followed her and she was featured on numerous magazine covers. Poison Ivy, Bad Girls, Everyone Says I Love You, Scream and Batman Forever are just some of the movies she made her come back through. She made her acting prowess felt by her performances in these movies.

She added over the later years to her portfolio The Wedding Singer, Ever After, Never Been Kissed, Charlie's Angels, Fever Pitch and Riding in Cars With Boys making her mark in the industry. Charlie's Angels was a huge success and she acted in the sequel too. She had a role too in confessions of a dangerous mind. She started her own production company, Flower Films.

She married again. In 2000, she tied the knot with Tom Green but that too lasted twice as long as her earlier marrige had lasted. She started out with a mere seventy five thousand dollars for her role in ET compared her fee for her role in the Charlie's Angels Sequel-fourteen million dollars!!!

Her latest movies are Lucky You and Grey Gardens, both yet to be released. She is also acting in a romantic sitcom about a lyricist and a musician who fall in love, which is still work in progress. She is the fourth Barrymore to get a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame.
