Tabassum Hashmi Popularly known as Tabu was born on 4th November 1970 in Hyderabad. Mother and father names are 'Rizwana' and 'Jamal Hashmi'.She is niece of bollywood actress Shabana Azmi. Her sister Farha is a well known bollywood actress. While still in school, her parents got separated and Tabu"s mom moved with her daughters to Mumbai. The family underwent many financial problems and her mom had to work hard to make ends meet. Tabu started her film career as a child artiste for Dev Anand's Hum Naujawan. Tabu's career as a lead artist opened with a grand production. She was taken by Boney Kapoor in his film to be directed by Shekhar Kapur and was cast opposite Sanjay Kapoor in Prem.
The film Prem did not do well commercially, but Tabu was noticed. Her film Vijaypath was a hit. She was an actress, who was willing to take on challenges and experiment. Then she got Gulzar's film Maachis. In this film she came up with a performance that won her the National Award.
Tabu also placed her faith in debutante director Madhur Bhandarkar and signed the bold and controversial movie Chandni Bar in which she played a bar dancer; the actress did a lot of research before the shoot to get into the skin of the character and gave an astounding performance; she won the National Award for Best Actress for this movie as well.
Tabu has also acted in Mira Nair"s Namesake and it is said to be her career"s best performance. Her recent release Cheeni Kum has done quite well in overseas as well as in India. She played the part of a 34 year-old woman who is romanced by a 64 year-old Amitabh Bachchan. She recently signed renowned dress designer Vikram Phadnis' directorial debut. It most likely will also star Salman Khan and another actress.
Tabu is regarded as one of the most talented actress in Bollywood, Her performance in the films Astitva, Priyadarshan's Viraasat and Kamal Haasan's Chachi 420 were also appreciated. Tabu took a sabbatical and headed to her hometown Hyderabad. The actress has been keeping a low profile and is working in only selective movies.
