Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the role of Sherry Swanson in Laurie Colleyr's indie drama Sherrybaby. Sherry Swanson, the 22-year old drug addict has just finished three years of jail, and is now trying to reconnect with her daughter, Alexis (Ryan Simpkins). She is in search for a decent job as well. But to her dismay, she discovers that finding employment, staying clean and mastering motherhood are much harder and more complex than life behind bars. Gyllenhaal's performance as Sherry is very astounding. "(The film) takes somebody who is so easy to judge, so easy to write off and I think it asks you, Can you be compassionate enough to really understand her and try to love her?'" says Gyllenhaal. "That's really a kind of honorable thing for a film to do."

However it seems her fans will not be able to see her for quite some time as she's expecting a baby with her fiancÉe, actor Peter Sarsgaard. She recently appeared in The Great New Wonderful, World Trade Center, Trust the Man and as a voice in the animated Monster House. Her film Stranger Than Fiction, co-starring Will Ferrell and Emma Thompson will hit theatres on November 10, 2006.
