Ten Canoes has been put forward as Australia's entry for the 2007 Academy Awards in the foreign language category. The movie was directed by Rolf De Heer marking his 11th film. It is Australia's first indigenous language film.
The movie recounts the story of a young man, Dayindi played by Jamie Gulpilil who yearns for one of the wives of his older brother. In order to teach him tribal law, tribal leaders tell him a story of wrong love, kidnapping, sorcery and revenge. The film was played at the Cannes International Film Festival in May and won de Heer a special jury prize. It also won a silver medallion at the Telluride Film Festival in the U.S, this week.
