Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), after finishing college, wishes she could work at The New Yorker. In her efforts to fulfill her desire, she happens to get a job as a personal assistant to the Editor-in-Chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) of New York fashion magazine, Runaway. Though she is unaware of the facts related to beauty, glamour or the brand-conscious world of fashion designers, she takes the job as a stepping stone to another better journalism position. Miranda hires Andrea as her second assistant.
The comedy-drama film is the adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's novel, The Devil Wears Prada. The movie has Miranda as the devil of the story, who is the obsessed self-centered, demanding editor-in-chief of the bible of New York fashion magazines, "Runway."
The first assistant of Miranda, Emily (Emily Blunt), familiarizes Andy of the ways a job should be performed to the utmost satisfaction of Miranda. The devil in prada, Miranda uses her power and influence to make people do her bidding. Andy is horrified by Miranda's demands. Runway's witty, soul-dead art director, Nigel (Stanley Tucci) informs Andy of the fashion do's and don'ts so that she can do her job without offending their highly demanding boss. She has been told umpteen times that thousands of young women would die, or kill, for her job.
Slowly and steadily, Andy finds herself deeply involved into the world of Runway. Andy has a sweet boyfriend, Nate (Adrian Grenier) who is a cook. They used to live together in a West Village hovel. Nate does not like the changes he observes in Andy.
Miranda orders Andy to obtain the next unpublished Harry Potter manuscript, with the intention to make her quit the job. The determined young woman, Andy takes all possible measures to please her boss. She makes a new friend, one of the magazine's fashion editors (Stanley Tucci). As she begins to change her lifestyle and her attempts to fulfill her boss's ever-changing demands, she starts to lose her friends, family and even her boyfriend, Nate.
She moves to Paris with Miranda, where she encounters all the glamour she had ever seen in her life and meets the freelance journalist, Christian Thompson (Simon Baker). Thompson is a sexy, charming and successful writer who is very much interested in helping Andy with her writing career. She is now forced to think she is in the right direction. Her dream was to become an excellent writer, be competent in her work, and not become a slave to Miranda. Will Andy leave her old friends and her beloved boyfriend for glamour to follow the Empress-of-Fashion? Will Andy forget Nate for Christian who wants to help her with her writing career?
Director David Frankel has assured a smooth flow from humour to more serious scenes in a balanced manner so that the viewers do not lose interest in the movie at any instant. The movie does offer laughs and also ensures that there's a moral at the end of every action.
