Washington (ANI): 'Resident Evil: Extinction" director Russell Mulcahy has signed on to helm "Zen in the Art of Slaying Vampires". CP Prods. partners Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters are bringing the pic to the big screen with Capitol Films' David Bergstein financing and selling it.

The movie is based on a novel by Steven-Elliot Altman that's the first in a three-book series. In it, the protagonist turns into a vampire when he and his lover are attacked in lower Manhattan. Though his girlfriend dies, the protagonist survives, and he struggles to overcome his murderous instincts and thirst for blood through Zen meditation.

A struggle for his soul ensues between the bloodsuckers and the Zen masters. Altman is writing the script for the movie, reports Variety. CP's Cerenzie and Peters who are producing are also working together with Altman on a game version of "Zen." Mulcahy said he liked "the pathos of the lead characters and the way it is wrapped in a world of mythology."
