This day marks singer Amy Winehouse's what would have been, the 32nd birthday. The Grammy winner might not be with us, but her soulful voice and music keeps her fresh in our memory.
Amy Winehouse struggled with addiction and died at the age of 27 in July, 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. The singer shot to immense fame after her song, Rehab topped the charts.
The "Rehab" singer won five Grammy Awards for the 2006 album. Amy Winehouse was really talented and the song, Rehab was written just casually. The late singer was walking the streets with her producer Mark Ronson talking about how her friends were trying to check her into a rehab for alcohol abuse and then she suddenly broke out into the first line of the song.
When Ronson asked whose song was it, she simply replied, "I wrote it off the top of my head, I was just joking."
English singer and songwriter known for her deep vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres found international success with her second album, "Back to Black."
Despite being in the public eye and hitting headlines for her addictions, very little is known about the singer. You can watch the Asif Kapadia's documentary, 'Amy' based on Amy Winehouse's career to get to know more.
However, here are some more facts to know about Amy Winehouse.
Amy began writing music at the age of 14 and a former boyfriend sent a tape of her singing with a jazz band to an A&R (Artists and Repertoire) man.
Wanted to be a waitress
In Rolling Stone's 2007 cover story, it was revealed that Amy "didn't aspire to be a musician, though; instead, she fantasized about being a roller-skating waitress like the ones she'd seen in 'American Graffiti.'" A waitress from that film is shown in the image above.
Amy Winehouse formed the rap group with her best friend, Juliette Ashby when she was just 10-years-old. Winehouse described Sweet 'N' Sour as being the "little white Jewish Salt-n-Pepa" and that she was "Sour."
Amy's addiction made headlines which eventually took her life. Fielder-Civil and Winehouse's divorce in 2009 was apparently the reason which got her introduced to crack and heroin.
Her Super Sexuality
The Guardian had a Q&A with Amy Winehouse in 2007 where one of the questions was "What would your super power be?" Winehouse answered, "super sexuality." In the same interview, Amy also revealed how sex helped her relax, "more sex and more gym" was the simple thing that improved her life. Her favourite word was, "Fuckery."
Before winning Grammy awards and singing, she apparently used to work as an entertainment reporter. However, she found the job boring and quit to find a career in singing. The rest is all history.
Self-harming and disorders
Amy once confessed to self-harming and spoke of battles with eating disorders. The English singer was so madly in love with her then fiance, Blake Fielder-Civil, she carved his into her stomach with a shard of mirror which was a crop during a photo shoot with Terry Richardson. In May 2007, Amy married Blake in a secret ceremony in Miami, and got divorced in 2009. Before 2007, the two allegedly cut themselves together to ease the pain of withdrawal.
