Viola Davis Makes Emmys History, Becomes 1st African-American To Win Best Actress In Drama

Viola Davis just made a history at the Emmy Awards 2015. The 'How To Get Away With Murder' actress became the first African American woman to win the Emmy for best lead actress in a drama.

While Game of Thrones dominated the night, Viola Davis alone made a history by sweeping away one of the biggest awards of the night. She is the first black actress in history to win Best Actress in a Drama. It was her first nomination and win at Emmys.

Viola Davis was all smiling when she graced the red carpet of Emmys 2015 with husband, Julius Tennon and did not see this history coming.

As soon as her name was announced, the actress was shocked and her inspiring acceptance speech won the night at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

In my mind I see a line and over that line, I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line, but I can't seem to get there no how. I can't seem to get over that line. That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else, is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here's to all the writers, the awesome people -Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes, people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading women, to be black. And to the to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharie, the Meagan Goods, to Gabrielle Union, thank you for taking us over that line.
