Gangubai Hangal cremated with state honour

The funeral ceremony of Hindustani classical music vocalist Gangubai Hangal was held with all state honours at Gangubai Gurukul Trust. The cremation was done between 11.15 and 11.30 am this morning and Gangubai's son Baburao performed the rites.

Gangubai's funeral ceremony was attended by many prominent leaders like Legislative Assembly speaker Jagadish Shettar, member of Legislative Council Veeranna Mattikatti, MP Pralhad Joshi, former minister Basavaraj Horatti, members of HDMC, District Commissioner of Dharwad and thousands of Gangubai fans. However, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa could not make it to the occasion.


Classical vocalist Gangubai dies

Earlier, Gangubai's body, which was kept in a glass casket at Glass House, Hubli, was taken in a flower-bedecked van through the main avenues of Hubli which were lined by hundreds of people. A state police contingent reversed arms and offered a gun salute as the mortal remains of the Kirana Gharana exponent was consigned to the flames at Gangubai Gurukul Trust run by the state government in Hubli.

Gangubai Hangal passed away at Lifeline Hospital Hubli (Hubballi) in Karnataka following cardiac and respiratory problems this morning. She was 97 years old. Her funeral ceremony will be held at 9.30 am on Wednesday.
