Kaddi Pudi stands different from my earlier films: Suri

Ace director Suri, one of the successful directors of Kannada films, is back with Kaddi Pudi. For the first time, he has worked with Hattrick Hero Shivaraj Kumar. Like his earlier movies, the latest flick too is an action film. But according to the director, it is different from his earlier films.

In an interview with Oneindia, the director opened up on the film. Here are the excerpts:

Tell us about the film.
Kaddi Pudi does not come under the category of hero-worshipping films. In this film, neither hero bashes 50 members at once nor will it show him as the messiah of masses. It is a screenplay-based film and demands best performance from the actors. I can say that it is an experimental film, which stands different from all my other films.

Considering Shivaraj Kumar's dancing abilities, filmmakers have often used his skills to impress his fans. But there have been no choreographers used for any of the five songs in Kaddi Pudi.
The speciality of the film is that even the caption of the film is unusual. Here, the script has not demanded it. Hence, I decided not to rope in choreographers to shoot the songs. It could have been filmy if we opted someone to direct the songs. I wanted to give it a natural feel and appeal and the three-minute songs would not have done any good to my story.

Firstly, we played the song, observed how actors could move their legs for the track and recorded it on a video camera. Later, we utilised it while shooting the songs. 'Soundarya samara...' is a Kathak themed track. So, we took an expert's help to shoot a few moves. Apart from it, audience will only see natural movements.

So, we can't expect good dance steps in Kaddi Pudi...
There are good dancing steps in the film. But you don't see 15-20 members dancing behind the lead stars in Kaddi Pudi. It is the story of a rowdy and there is no need for us to show him like a dancer. Just because Shivanna is good at dance, we can't use it in his every film. Isn't? Shivanna Famous For Waving Swords

Shivanna is famous for waving swords. We have seen it over the years in all his action films. How different is this film?
Shivaraj Kumar used to wave the sword (longu) in his right hand, but in Kaddi Pudi he does it in his left hand (laughs). Is Duniya a rowdyism film or a love story flick? Is Jogi an action film or a mother-sentiment movie? Like those films, this is not an out and out rowdyism movie. There are the substances of underworld at parts, but it is not a regular action film.

Aindrita Ray has done an item number in Kaddi Pudi...
Aindrita Ray appears at some point of the film. It is not just a guest-appearance kind of character. The song 'Soundarya samara...' is at the important phase of the movie.

Item-Special Debate

Will you mind if we call it as an item number as many actresses, these days, are objecting to it?
The name item number is popular. So, people call such songs with that name. In my opinion, it will be nice if you call it a special number.

Is Item Number Necessary?

Is it necessary to have special songs in films?
In Sathyaharischandra, there are three special songs. In the first half, we will see two songs and in the second, there is one. 'Neenu nanage sikki biddeyo...' and 'Kuladalli keel...' were special numbers according to me. In screenplay, 7th and 8th reels used to be the difficult parts. It is because the film will be moving towards pre-climax and in order to entertain people, there used to be special songs. But the placement of the songs have now been drastically changed.

In my Junglee, 'E maja vada...' track was intentionally used, but in Anna Bond and Jackie, there was no need for it. In Kaddi Pudi, the special number will be part of the storyline.

What role Radhika Pandit has played in the movie?
Radhika Pandit will be seen as a junior artist, who sails from a middle-class family. She lives with her mother and granny. The hero becomes the reason for the incidents that occur in her life.
