In a condolence message, the Governor said, "the death of Aranmula Ponnamma, the matriarch of Malayalam cinema has aggrieved every one who has seen her acclaimed performances. Ponnamma had immortalised the lovable, affectionate and kind mother through her roles in a career lasting six decades."
Her demise is as much a loss to her family as it is to her large number of admirers. The history of Malayalam cinema will be incomplete without a reference to her contribution," he said. The 96-year-old Ponnamma acted in nearly 500 films in a career spanning six decades.
