INDEPENDENCE DAY SPECIAL: Best Patriotic Movies In Malayalam

Today (15 August), India is celebrating its 69th Independence Day. Indian cinema has witnessed a lot of movies based on patriotism. Many have won accolades and some just came and vanished. But still, people love to watch such movies.

As far as Malayalam industry is concerned, there are a few but worth-watching patriotic movies. Some are very popular, while some are not. In Mollywood, Mammootty and Mohanlal have done movies which have patriotism as its subject.

Major Ravi was the director who incorporated the theme of patriotism more into Malayalam films. His combo with Mohanlal gave birth to many such movies which inspired its audience. Kandakar, Kurukshetra and Keetichakra are a few among them.

Mohanlal was awarded the Colonel rank by the military taking into consideration of all his patriotic movies. He was assigned as the brand ambassador to attract youngsters to come into military. Currently, Mohanlal works for the regiment placed at Kannur.

Bollywood, Tamil and Kannada too have patriotic movies credited to their list. Bhagat Singh, Border, LOC, etc., are some of the popular patriotic Bollywood movies. Mudhalvan, Indian, Roja, Bombay, Veeraputhran, etc., are some of the movies in Tamil, and Muthina Haara, Veerapa Nayaka and AK 47 are the popular films in Kannada.

The movie was directed by IV Sasi and was written by T Damodaran. The movie starred Mammootty, Madhu, Parvathy, Seema and Urvasi. The film won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value of that year.

The film was directed by Joshiy. Mammootty, Mukesh, Vikram, Sukumaran, Mohini, Priya Raman and Dileep appeared in lead roles. The story was about the life of an Indian Air Force officer (Group captain Eashwar) who engaged himself in a project called Red Alert which involves the renovation of condemned Aircraft.

Keerthichakra

It was directed and written by debutante Major Ravi, starring Mohanlal and Jiva. The film was based on true events related to insurgency in the Indian controlled region of Kashmir. The political situation of the conflict is portrayed from an Indian perspective in the film.

Kurukshetra

It was directed by Major Ravi and starred Mohanlal in the lead. It was a sequel to the 2006 movie Keerthichakra, and the second in the Major Mahadevan series. The film is based on Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan. The movie was average.

Kandahar

Kandahar

The film was directed by Major Ravi. It starred Mohanlal, reprising his role from the prequels, Keertichakra and Kurukshetra, as Major Mahadevan. Amitabh Bachchan and Ganesh Venkatraman also played major roles. The plot was based on the hijacking incident of Indian Airlines Flight 814.

It was Major Ravi's second venture as a director. Mammootty played the lead role in this film. The movie was based on the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the investigation that followed.

Kalapani

The film was directed by Priyadarshan, starring Mohanlal, Prabhu Ganesan, Tabu, Nedumudi Venu,Sreenivasan, Tinnu Anand, Annu Kapoor, Alex Draper, Amrish Puri and Vineeth. It was dubbed into Hindi (Saza-E-Kala Pani), Tamil (Siraichalai) and Telugu (Kaala Pani).

The film was about the lives of prisoners in British India, who are brought to Kalapani, the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Dileep and Prabhu played a splendid role in making the film successful. Director Vinayan was highly praised. The patriotism in the movie was truly great.

It was a bilingual action film in Malayalam and Tamil by T Aravind. The film featured Mammootty in the lead role. Arjun and Sneha were seen in supporting roles along with Sharada Arya, Rajkapoor, Nassar, Jai Akash, Jagadish, Deepak JD and late Rajan P Dev.

Baba Kalyani

Baba Kalyani was a Malayalam action film directed by Shaji Kailas. This film had Mohanlal in the title role, supported by Biju Menon, Saikumar, Indrajith Sukumaran, Mamta Mohandas and Jagathy Sreekumar.
