Mammootty's 10 Iconic Movies
Muhammad Kutty Ismail Panaparambil aka Mammootty, is completing the 35th year of his acting career. The veteran actor celebrated his 63rd birthday on September 7th. Despite his age, the megastar still manages to look young and handsome, and surely makes even the younger generation actors feel insecure.
Mammootty entered into movies with an uncredited role in the movie Anubhavangal Paalichakal, which had legendary actor Prem Nazir in lthe ead role. His movie career began with M T Vasudevan Nair directed Devalokam, in which he acted under the stage name Sajin. The project was shelved after a small schedule of filming and Mammootty came to be known in his original name itself.
Mammootty made his debut in an antagonist role with Vilkanundu Swapnangal directed by Azad and debuted in lead role with Sphodanam, directed by P G Vishwambaran. The actor has acted in more than 350 movies in a career span of 35 years. Mammootty holds the record for winning maximum number of Best Actor trophies in National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards South. The actor has also won the fourth highest civilian award of India Government, Padmashri and two honorary doctorates, one from University of Kerala and the other from University Of Calicut.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha
Mammootty won his first National Award for the performance in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. He enacted the historical character Chandu in the movie, directed by Hariharan and penned by M T Vasudevan Nair. The movie told the story of Chathiyan Chandu in a different perspective and changed the image of the character which was portrayed as a villain in earlier movies.
Thaniyavarthanam
Thaniyavarthanam marked the debut of legendary scenarist A K Lohithadas. Mammootty played Balan Master, a school teacher whom the family and friends suspects as a mental patient. The movie, directed by Sibi Malayil earned huge acclaims from audience and critics, and is considered as one of the best works of Mammootty till date.
Amaram
Amaram, directed by legendary director Bharathan, is considered as one of the classic movies of Malayalam. Mammootty's portrayal of Achu, an uneducated fisherman, who aims to make his daughter as an IAS officer, completely conquered the minds of audience. The character is considered as a master piece of Mammootty and a classic father role of Malayalam cinema.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar
Mammootty won the third National award trophy for his performance in the biopic, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, directed by Jabbar Patel. Mammootty played Dr B R Ambedkar, Father of Indian Constitution, in the movie. The movie, which was in English language, earned three awards in the National Film Awards of 1999.
Bhoothakkannadi
It is another iconic movie in Mammootty's career. Mammootty played Vidyadharan, a clock smith who fell mentally ill due to his incapability to face hard realities of life. Bhoothakkannadi was the directorial debut of veteran scenarist A K Lohithadas. The director won Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director, in National Film Awards.
Ponthanamada
Ponthanmada, directed by T V Chandran, was another stepping stone of Mammootty's career. He played Mada, a lower-cast worker and the movie revolves around Mada's relationship with his colonial landlord, played by Nasseruddin Shaw. Mammootty won his second Best Actor trophy in National Film Awards for his performances Ponthanmada and Vidheyan.
Mathilukal
Mathilukal is a movie adaption of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer's autobiographical novel of same name, directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Mammootty played Basheer, the writer who falls in love with a lady voice he hears from the women's jail during the period of imprisonment. Mammootty's performance earned him National Award, along with Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha.
Thalapathi
Thalapathi, the Tamil movie directed by Mani Ratnam, is another best work of Mamootty. The movie which was a modern adaption of the friendship story of Duryodhana and Karna, marked the union of Mammootty and Superstar Rajinikanth. Mammootty played Devraj, a golden-hearted don, which was an adaption of epic character Duryodhana, in the movie.
New Delhi
It was the movie which made wonders in Mammootty's career. New Delhi is a perfect action thriller directed by Joshiy. It is one of the biggest hits of Mammootty's career. He played a revenge-driven journalist G Krishnamoorthy, who starts his own newspaper to execute his plans. Mammootty earned the title Megastar after the release of New Delhi.
Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha
It is one of the finest movies of Mammootty and doubtlessly his best performance of recent times. Mammootty played three different characters Haridas, Ahmed Haji and Khalid Ahmed; who represents three generations, in the movie directed by Ranjith. Paleri Manikyam is based on T P Rajeevan's novel of same name.
