2015 has been a moderately successful year for Malayalam Cinema. The industry witnessed some thunderous box office successes as well as some pathetic flops this year, unlike the previous years. But it is clear that rate of failures is higher than successes this year.
It was a brilliant year for the industry when it comes to business, as a few movies went on to break all so-called collection records. Movies including Premam, Ennu Ninte Moideen, Amar Akbar Anthony, etc performed extremely well at the box office, and earned the critical acclaim as well.
When it comes to the number of films, Mammootty, Prithviraj and Jayasurya top the list with 6 movies each. Mohanlal, Dileep, Kunchacko Boban, and Asif Ali had 5 releases each. Nivin Pauly, Dulquer Salmaan and Fahadh Faasil had 3 releases.
Mollywood's journey started this year with the release of Sand City, the romantic thriller directed by actor-director Shankar. The industry witnessed approximately 126 releases so far. Thilothama, the Rachana Narayanankutty starrer was the last film which hit the theatres.
Picket 43, the Major Ravi directed movie which had Prithviraj in the lead role, is the first success of the year. The first blockbuster of 2015 is the Nivin Pauly starrer Oru Vadakkan Selfie. Alphonse Puthren directed romantic comedy Premam, which also had Nivin in the lead, remains the biggest hit of the year.
When it comes to the prestigious National Film Awards, 2015 was a disappointing year for the Malayalam movie industry. Mollywood failed to make it big unlike the last few years, and ended up with just 5 awards. Mammootty and Jayasurya were considered for the Best Actor award till the final round.
The Kerala State Film Awards were announced in August; which was extremely late. The results were quite surprising for both the audiences and media, as the mainstream movies won the awards in the maximum categories.
Let's have a look into the achievements of our top 10 actors in 2015....
Mammootty had a perfect year with 6 projects. The actor earned highly positive reviews for his performance in Pathemari. His other successful movies include Fireman and Bhaskar The Rascal. His next movie Puthiya Niyamam will release on December 24th.
Mohanlal had a bad year, with only two moderately successful movies and three pathetic flops. No Mohanlal movie has been slated to release for this Christmas season. We wish him all the best for the next year.
Prithviraj had the biggest hit of his career with Ennu Ninte Modieen, while Amar Akbar Anthony and Anarkali also emerged as blockbusters. He also had 3 other releases, including Picket 43, Ivide and Double Barrel. Picket 43 was a hit; while the rest two were flops.
Nivin Pauly had three releases this year, of which Premam emerged as the second highest ever grosser of Malayalam Cinema. Oru Vadakkan Selfie was also a blockbuster; while Mili was an average grosser.
Dileep had 5 projects this year, in which 4 of them have hit the theatres. Chandrettan Evideya and Life Of Josutty were super hits. While the rest of them were flops. His last release of the year, Two Countries will be released for Christmas.
Dulquer had three projects this year (including his Tamil-Telugu bilingual OK Kanmani). His only Malayalam flick of the year, 100 Days Of Love was an average grosser. His next movie Charlie will be released on December 17th.
It was a disappointing year for Fahadh Faasil with no successful ventures in his kitty. The actor had 3 releases this year, but all the movies failed to impress. We hope that he will bounce back with a brilliant film soon.
2015 is a mixed year for Jayasurya, with one blockbuster (Amar Akbar Anthony), one super hit (Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam), and four flops. We hope that the actor will soon get enough recognition from the award juries and film festivals.
The actor had 5 releases his year. We would like to appreciate him for taking up an experimental movie like Chirakodinja Kinavukal. Among the rest of his rest of the movies, Madhura Naranga was a hit; while the other 3 failed to impress.
Asif had 5 releases, including Amar Akbar Anthony in which he made a cameo appearance. Nirnaayakam earned huge critical acclaim; while his first production venture Kohinoor was a super hit. Rest of the movies were flops.
