There have been many such instances in Mollywood and it is Megastar Mammootty who has appeared this way, the maximum number of times. Take a look at the 5 films in which Mammootty appeared as himself.

No. 20 Madras Mail (1990)

This movie should definitely be the first one in this list. It had Mammootty playing himself and that too in a full length role. The movie is best remembered for the superb combination scenes of Mammooty and Mohanlal.

Chiriyo Chiri (1982)

This film released way back in the 80's, much before Mammootty became a star. The film which had Balachandra Menon in the lead role had Mammootty appearing as himself in few scenes.

One Way Ticket (2008)

One Way Ticket narrated the story of a Mammootty fan named Kunjappu, the character played by Prithviraj. So, presence of the Megastar was indispensable. Mammootty did appear in 2-3 scenes of the film and played an important role in the climax.

Best Of Luck (2010)

Mammootty made a cameo appearance in this film which had the actor appearing as himself. The film progresses as a story being narrated to the Megastar. The film had Asif Ali, Kailash, Prabhu, Rima Kallingal, Urvashi in main roles

Kadal Kadannoru Maathukutty (2013)

Kadal Kadannoru Maathukutty had Mammooty playing the role of Mathukutty. Interestingly, there is a scene in this film where Maathukutty confronts the real life Mammootty.

It has to be the film No: 20 Madras Mail that comes first to our mind when we discuss about this. Interestingly, this film had a rare instance of a superstar playing himself in a full length role.

Apart from Mammootty, we have seen other actors like Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, Dileep, Kunchacko Boban etc appearing in some of the films as themselves.

Mollywood industry can be proud of this fact since such appearances are not that common in films of other languages.

But, it should also be noted that, such appearances might receive a flak if the instances don't gel with the story line of the movie.

Most of the times, it would be a guest appearance or a kind of an extended guest appearance. But, it has to be admitted that the audiences do experience some sort of thrill while watching their heroes onscreen in this fashion.
