It is always a joy to see Mohanlal in mass-hero roles. He has that amazing quality to bring in charisma to the characters, adding his own trademark style. The recently released movie Pulimurugan is an example of that.

Over the years, the audiences have enjoyed his mass-hero movies and when they saw the actor once again in such an avatar, twirling his moustache and upping the mass factor, the film emerged as a big hit.

Twirling the moustache is considered to be a characteristic of heroism and no one other than Mohanlal could do it with perfection. Here, we are listing some of the successful mass hero roles of Mohanlal, which had the actor with a twirled moustache.

Rajavinte Makan (1986)

Well, this movie did lay the path to stardom for Mohanlal. The actor played the role of a gangster named Vincent Gomez, and he appeared with twirled moustache in the film. The movie went on to become a big box office success and thus, a new superstar was born.

Devasuram (1993)

How can we forget the character Mangalasseri Neelakandan? The cult status that this particular character enjoys in the hearts of Malayalam film audiences, is phenomenal. There is a particular scene in one of the song sequences of the film, where the actor twirls his moustache. It is sure to give goosebumps, each time you watch it.

Spadikam (1995)

Aadu Thoma, the character from the film Spadikam is one of the best roles in the acting career of Mohanlal, so far. We simply can't imagine any other actor in the shoes of Aadu Thoma. The twirled moustache, the black shirt and Rayban glasses, all went on to set a trend.

Aaraam Thampuran (1997)

Aaraam Thampuran marked the first association of Mohanlal-Shaji Kailas-Ranjith team. Mohanlal portrayed the role of Jagannathan, who has the shades of a mass hero. The film emerged as a huge box office success.

Narasimham (2000)

Narasimham, is the father of all the mass hero characters in Malayalam cinema. In fact, this was the film, which set up the trend of mass hero movies in Mollywood. The character Induchoodan played by Mohanlal appears in a stylish avatar and in fact, this film brought in the trend of twirled moustache and established it as a characteristics of heroism.

Raavanaprabhu (2001)

Raavanaprabhu, which is the second part of the much popular film Devasuram, came in at a time when mas hero movies were much popular in Malayalam films. This film had Mangalasseri Neelakandan Karthikeyan, as a mass hero.


In fact, most of the films in the above list were trendsetters of their respective times. But, following Narasimham, a flurry of movies with similar theme came in, which didn't go down well with the audiences.

With Pulimurugan, the idea of a mass hero has taken an all new turn and all credits to director Vysakh, who has packaged the movie in the most entertaining manner, without going overboard.

Well, the wait begins once again, for the next movie in which we will get to see our Lalettan with a twirled moustache.
