Malayalam cinema has had only very few politics based movies, which stayed true to the genre. Films which are cent percent based on politics are very hard to find in Malayalam cinema.

But we have got movies which could be termed as political thrillers, which were more along the lines of action dramas. Films of Shaji Kailas and Renji Panikker are examples of this genre.

Films like Commissioner, The King, Ekalavyan, Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans, Janadhipathyam, Vellimoonga etc had politics as a central theme.

Films like Sandesam and Panchavadi Palam did have more of a realistic approach, which made them feature in the list of best political films in Malayalam.

Nowadays, such films are hard to find. Interestingly, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's most recent film Ozhivu Divasathe Kali, which won the Kerala State Film award for Best Film, did present a view on the current political situations and also the outlook of people towards elections.
