The references of food and various cuisines could very well spice up a movie watching experience. Then what would be the case when an entire movie is based on food?

Malayalm films are not new to food based movies but there are only a few movies in Mollywood's credit, which could be purely called as food based movies. Here, we list some of the Malayalam films in which food played an important part in the storyline. Take a look.

Salt N' Pepper

This movie definitely has to top this list. The title song of the film is solely enough to tantalize your taste buds with the sight of some exotic dishes. The film directed by Aashiq Abu did have an equally delicious love story to narrate.

Usthad Hotel

Usthad Hotel should be the most prominent and important movie in this list. The movie had a very important message to deliver to the society. The story of the film has been narrated in the backdrop of a hotel named Usthad Hotel.

Kammath And Kammath

Kammath And Kammath was a mass entertainer which narrated the story of two brothers, who owned a well-renowned dosa shop, which is best known for the variety of dosas it serves. The song Dosa Nalloru.. from the film is sure to ring your taste buds.

Spanish Masala

Dileep played the role of a cook in this film directed by Lal Jose. A special dosa named Spanish Masala, which the character makes, has an important part to play in the film.

Mister Butler

The film was one of the earliest hits in the film career of Dileep. The actor played the role of a butler, who wins the hearts of all by showcasing his dexterity in preparing various dishes.


Not all the movies in the above list did have food as the central theme. Only, Usthad Hotel and Salt N Pepper could be purely be categorised as food based movies.

Well, the Malayalam film industry is obviously not new to the references of foods and dishes in films. The song 'Ayila Porichathundu..Karimeen Varathathundu' from the film Venalil Oru Mazha was one among the first songs, which teased the tastebuds of the listeners.

But, it was the film Salt N Pepper, which paved way for more food based movies in Malayalam. The film was kind of a revolution and did show the avenues of food based movies in Malayalam.
