There was a time when Malayalam actors were not that keen on investing money in films. It was considered rather risky and a monopoly of few production houses alone.
But, with the passage of time, there has been a drastic change in the outlook of celebrities and now they are willing to fund for movies. Take a look at some of the prominent Malayalam actors who are producers too.
Interestingly, Mohanlal launched his banner Pranavam Arts, way back in the year 1990, by producing the film His Highness Abdullah. Pranavam Arts International has given some memorable films like Kalapani, Bharatham, Vanaprastham etc.
Mammootty's Playhouse International is mainly active in the distribution of films. They have distributed a number of Mammootty films and other actors' films. They ventured into production by producing the film Jawan Of Vellimala.
Graand Production owned by Dileep started off in style by producing the film CID Moosa, which was a runaway success. Dileep also turned producer for films like Malarvadi Arts Club, which introduced actors like Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese etc and also launched Vineeth Sreenivasan as a director.
Prithviraj's August Cinema co-owned by Shaji Nadesan, Santhosh Sivan and Arya, is one of the most reputed banners of Malayalam film industry. They have produced films like Urumi, Indian Rupee, Double Barrel, Kadal Kadannoru Maathukutty etc. Their upcoming venture is Anuraga Karikkin Vellam starring Biju Menon and Asif Ali in the lead roles.
Jayasurya decided to wear the hat of a producer for the film Punyalan Agarbathis, directed by Ranjith Sankar. Jayasurya is a part of the production house named Dreams N Beyond which is co-owned by director Ranjith Sankar.
Asif Ali ventured into production of films through Kohinoor directed by Vinay Govind. The film also launched the actor's production house named Adam's World Of Imagination which is co-owned by two of his friends.
Nivin Pauly wore the hat of a producer for Abrid Shine's film Action Hero Biju. The film was produced under the banner of Pauly Jr pictures.
Interestingly, this is a common sight in industries like Bollywood, where the actors themselves would be funding for most of their movies. This trend has slowly surfaced in Mollywood too, which is indeed a good sign.
Vineeth Sreenivasan, is turning a producer for an upcoming film titled as Anandam, which would be directed by Ganesh Raj. Actor Joju George, also recently wore the hat of a producer for the film Charlie.
Not many know that Mammootty and Mohanlal co-owned a production house along with I V Sasi, Seema and Century Kochumon. The production house was named as Casino films and it did produce some classics like Nadodikkattu, Gandhinagar Second Street etc.
Actors like Maniyanpilla Raju and Lal ventured into producion way back and they have been prominent names in the producers list.
Similarly, Friday Film House, which is owned by Vijay Babu and Sandra Thomas is one of the reputed production houses of Mollywood and they have produced 7 films so far.
