1. Madhu

Veteran actor Madhu has directed close to 15 films, that too, when he was at the peak of his career. He debuted as a director through the film Priya which released in the year 1970. Most of the films directed by him were hits or average grossers

Prathap Pothen

Prathap Pothen debuted as an actor through the film Thakara directed by Bharathan. Later, after acting in a few films, he turned to direction. He did a number of films in Tamil and also gave Malayalam some beautiful films like Rithubhedam, Daisy and Oru Yathramozhi. He is working on his next directorial venture in Malayalam which has Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role.

Sreenivasan

Sreenivasan is a real all rounder. We know his brilliance in writing and his dexterity in film-making can be easily known through two films Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, both of which are considered to be classics.

Jagathy Sreekumar

Jagathy Sreekumar has directed two films. The first one being Annakutti Kodambakkam Vilikkunnu and the second is Kalyana Unnikal. Both the films were of the comedy genre.

Madhupal

Madhupal did carve a place of his own in the industry doing some supporting roles in films. But, he made a big impact when he became a director through the film Thalappavu. The film was followed by another movie named Ozhimuri which too, won great reviews. The actor turned director would be next helming the film based on Karnan which will have Mammootty in the lead.

Vineeth Sreenivasan

He is a real all-rounder. After making his debut as a singer in films, he stepped into acting. But, something more was on the store and he became a director through Malarvadi Arts Club. His films speak volumes about his skills in film-making and he has directed 4 films so far.

Salimkumar

Salimkumar who took a brief sabbatical from acting in films, went on to direct a film named Compartment, which did handle a very important social message.

Vineeth Kumar

The young actor couldn't make a big mark as a solo lead actor. But, Vineeth Kumar came back strongly in director's role by making Fahadh Faasil starrer Ayaal Njanalla. Vineeth won rave reviews for his making style.

Sidharth Bharathan

Film-making is in his blood and he proved that through his works. The son of veteran director Bharathan, made an entry to film industry as an actor. But later, the actor found his forte and established his film-making skills through the film Nidra.

Nadirsha

Nadirsha didn't have a successful career as an actor as he was mostly seen in minimal roles. But, the actor made a smashing entry as a director with the film Amar Akbar Anthony which was a runaway hit.

The directorial venture of Soubin Shahir has been named as Parava. The film would be produced by Anwar Rasheed Entertainment. It is to be noted that, Soubin Shahir made his entry in to films as an Assistant Director.

Many Malayalam actors have tried their hands at film-making. Some went on to be successful whereas rest had to be contented with the actor's job.

Film-making is definitely not an easy job. It is similar to captaining a ship and due knowledge about the technicalities is necessary to emerge as a good film-maker.

Most of the actors now are open to learn more about film-making. Young actors and actresses are coming forward to learn more about the various aspects of film-making.

Recently, we saw actors like Aju Varghese and Mythili assisting directors like Vineeth Sreenivasan and Ranjith respectively.

Certain actors like Madhupal, Sidharth Bharathan etc became more successful as film-makers rather than actors. Most recently, we saw Nadirsha too, making his entry as a director through Amar Akbar Anthony.
