Malayalam Music Composers Who Have Won National Awards
The 63rd National Film Awards have been announced and to add much to the happiness of Malayalam film industry, M Jayachandran has been adjudged the Best Music Director for the song Kaathirunnu Kaathirunnu from Ennu Ninte Moideen.
This is not the first time that a Malayalam composer is winning the National Film Award. So, here we present a list of Malayalam composers who have won National film awards in the past.
Johnson
Johnson is the first Malayalam composer to win a National Film Award. He has also got the distinction of winning two consecutive National Film Awards in the music category. First, he won the award for Best Music Director in the year 1993 for his work in Ponthan Mada. Next year, he got the award for Best Background Score for the film Sukrutham.
Ouseppachan
Ouseppachan is another Malayalam music director who has won the National Film Award for Best Music Director. His work in Ore Kadal (2007) fetched him this award.
Issac Thomas Kottukapally
Issac Thomas Kottukapally, who is best known for his works in parallel films, went on to win a National Film Award for the Best Background Score for his work in the film Adaminte Makan Abu (2010).
Bijibal
Bijibal, who has won multiple State Film Awards, won the National Film Award for Best Background Score at the 60th National Film Awards. The jury was impressed by the tunes that he set for Kaliyachan.
Gopi Sunder
Gopi Sunder brought laurels to Malayalam industry at the 62nd National Film Awards by winning an award for Best Background Score through his work in the Malayalam film 1983.
M Jayachandran has had a record run at State Film Awards by winning it 6 times. But, this is for the first time that he is winning the much coveted National Award.
Interestingly, Ramesh Narayanan who composed the song 'Sharadambaram' from Ennu Ninte Moideen, went on to win the Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director for the year 2015.
M Jayachandran is also the third Malayalam composer to win the National Film Award for the Best Music Director. Rest of the composers, went on to win awards in the Background Score Category.
Non-Keralites like Ilaiyaraaja and Bombay Ravi have also won Best Music Director awards for their work in Malayalam films namingly Pazhassi Raja and Sukrutham respectively.
