Piracy is one of the grevious issues that the Malayalam film industry has been facing, for a long time. The damage that piracy causes in a small industry like Mollywood is huge.
It was recently that Mohanlal starrer Pulimurugan crossed the 100-Crore mark. The film has had a fantastic run so far with huge crowds pouring in to the theatres. But reports came in that, the pirated copies of the movie surfaced on the internet on November 4, 2016.
In fact, the makers of the film immediately launched a complaint and Kerala Police Cyberdrome removed the download links from the internet.
There have been previous instances where piracy affected the big run of Malayalam movies. Here, we list some of the Malayalam movies which were hit by piracy.
In fact, the movie Premam was affected heavily by the pirated copies that surfaced weeks after the movie's release. The film was cruising ahead at the box office but did slow down a bit since the censor copy of the movie leaked online. Nonetheless, the film went on to make it big at the box office but the movie had the potential to be an industry hit, if the censor copy hadn't leaked.
Dulquer Salmaan starrer Charlie got one of the fantastic openings in the year 2015. The film fetched gold at the box office with positive reviews pouring in. Later, pirated CDs of the film surfaced in the market, which had slightly affected the future run of the movie.
Rajeev Ravi's Kammatipaadam, which had Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role, opened to good responses from the audiences. When the film was sailing smoothly, a particular page on Facebook uploaded the theatre prints of the movie. Producers of the film immediately filed a complaint regarding the same.
Dulquer Salmaan starrer Kali also faced the same problem, a week before the official release of its DVDs. A pirated copy which had a watermark labelled as preview was spreading on social media circuits.
Ranjith's recent directorial venture Leela was also affected hugely by piracy. The pirated copies of the film were available online, immediately after the release of the movie. In fact, Leela was the first Malayalam movie to have an official online release along with the theatre release.
In fact, team Pulimurugan did face some issues initially, when certain clips from the movie spread on social media circuits.
A film like Pulimurugan has the effort of a team of people, who have invested a lot of time and effort in the movie. The only way to curb piracy, is by taking a stand that we, the audiences would make it sure to watch the movie from the theatres.
