Accept it or not, the year 2016 was one of the finest years of the present decade for Mollywood. The year 2015 was a special one but 2016 went on to be even more better for the industry.
Most of the big movies released in 2016 did some grand business at the box office. Almost all the major stars of Mollywood chipped in with hits, which made the year a big one indeed.

1. Mohanlal
He has been tagged as the star of the year 2016 not for simple reasons. The actor had only two releases in Malayalam but both the movies were big money spinners. Pulimurugan went on to cross the 150-Crore mark and Oppam too, crossed the 50-Crore mark with ease. Cumulatively, Mohanlal movies crossed the 200-Crore mark and he is the only choice for the top spot.

2. Nivin Pauly
Nivin Pauly continued his dream run in 2016 as well, with both his movies emerging as blockbusters. His first release Action Hero Biju emerged as a blockbuster and his next release Jacobinte Swargarajyam too, kept the cash registers ringing.

Dileep
Dileep had a good start to 2016, with his 2015 Christmas release Two Countries enjoying a grand run in the theatres. He continued that with King Liar, which reportedly grossed over 25 Crores at the box office. His next two releases Pinneyum and Welcome To Central Jail couldn't reap in profit, but still the latter made some decent collection in its initial days.

4. Dulquer Salmaan
Dulquer Salmaan made an impact as an actor and a star in 2016. His two major releases, Kammatipaadam and Kali were successes at the box office and at the same time his film Charlie, which was a Christmas release of 2015 continued its good run in 2016 as well.

5. Mammootty
Mammootty had 4 releases but only two of them turned out to be profitable ventures. But, both the films couldn't make it really big at the box office. Thoppil Joppan and Kasaba managed to cross the 15-Crore mark.

6. Prithviraj
Prithviraj started off the year 2016 with a super hit in the form of Paavada, which reportedly touched the 17-Crore mark. Later, 3 films of the actor hit the theatres, in the form of Darwinte Parinamam, James And Alice and Oozham, but none of them could earn a hit tag.

Apart from the above mentioned actors, Fahadh Faasil also made an impact this year with his Maheshinte Prathikaaram, which emerged as a big blockbuster. His other release Monsoon Mangoes couldn't meet with success.
Actors like Kunchacko Boban and Jayasurya didn't have big hits to their credit. Jayasurya had a hit in the form of Pretham whereas Kunchacko Boban's Kochavva Paulo Ayyaappa Coelho turned out to be profitable.
Well, as mentioned above, the year clearly belonged to Mohanlal. Young actors like Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan too, proved their emerging star power by contributing the most.
