Scenarist-director Ranjith's Thirakkatha narrates the story of a young filmmaker Akbar Ahmed. Film-making is his passion, but not his job. He also runs a restaurant named 'Casablanca', along with his sweetheart Devayani and a group of friends. Due to their passion for cinema, they come together to plan and produce a classic which fortunately goes on to become a huge success, critically and commercially.
Akbar is now busy searching for a very different theme for his second film. Interestingly, he plans to film the story of film star Malavika, once a very popular actress whose present whereabouts are unknown. When Akbar and his friends go tracking Malavika, they come face-to-face with a love story that was hidden from the world. And this love story forms the plot for Akbar's new film Thirakkatha, which spans a period of three decades in the history of contemporary Malayalam Cinema.
Prithviraj dons the role of Akbar Ahmed, the young film director; Samvritha Sunil gives him company as Devayani. Although Samvrutha Sunil is Prithviraj's heroine in the film, the lead heroine of Thirakkatha is National award winner Priyamani, since the film in fact revolves around her character, Malavika.
Nishant Sagar plays a key role as a cinematographer named Kevin Paul. Anoop Menon also plays an important role in the film which has director Ranjith himself appearing in a guest role. Thirakkatha also stars Khushbu, Cochin Haneefa, Maniyan Pilla Raju, Nandu, Nishanth Sagar, Surabhi, and Augustine.
Thirakkatha is produced by Ranjith and Maha Subair under the banner of Capitol Theatre and Varnachithra. M.J. Radhakrishnan cranks the camera; Sharath sets to music the lyrics by Rafeeq Ahmed. Stills are by Shine Edamuttom. Thirakkatha is expected to hit theatres on October 9.
