Kanal Movie Review: A Passable Revenge Thriller

By Akhila Menon

Rating:
2.5/5

Kanal is the revenge thriller directed which stars Mohanlal in the lead role. The movie is directed by Padmakumar and written by S Suresh Babu. Anoop Menon plays a pivotal role. Kanal is produced by Abraham Mathew under the banner Abaam Movies.

Kanal Story

The movie begins with Prithviraj's voice over. The American recession creates a huge impact in the Gulf countries; thus turning the lives of businessmen Kuruvila Mathew (Atul Kulkarni) and Raghu upside down.

Then introduces Anantharaman (Anoop Menon), a journalist, John David (Mohanlal), an animator and their respective families, who meet up during a train journey. The movie takes a different turn when John and Anathan expolres their interconnected pasts. What happens next forms the rest of the plot.

Cast And Performance

Mohanlal is just outstanding as John David, a man with the shades of romance, humour, and negative elements. Anoop Menon has perfectly played Anantharaman and shares a great camaraderie with Mohanlal.

Atul Kulkarni is exceptional as the antagonist; but didn't has much scope to perform. Honey Rose and Sheelu Abraham are just okay in their minimal roles.

Nikita Thukral has nothing much to do other than look seductive. The rest of the star cast, including Innocent, Prathap Pothen, Santhosh Keezhattoor, Sadiq, Kochu Preman, Ambika Mohan, baby akshara Kishor etc are fine in their roles.

Script And Direction

Director Padmakumar and scenarist S Suresh Babu have succeeded in depicting a decent crime thriller. But the screenplay fails to keep the audience engaged after a point and falls into a slow pace at certain point.

But the movie correctly delivers the thrilling elements at right amount; which makes the movie watchable despite the lag.

Technical Aspects

Vinod Illampilly's cinematography has perfectly captures the richness of the sand city and Kerala with the complete glory. Ranjan Abraham's editing is not upto the marks as the movie falls into slow pace often.

Music

The songs composed by Vinu Thomas completely fails to make an impact. Ouseppachan's brilliant background score perfectly complements the mood of a thriller movie.

Verdict

An average revenge thriller for a one-time watch.
