Junga Story

Junga is an Tamil comedy movie written and directed by Rowthiram fame Gokul. The movie features Vijay Sethupathi, Sayyeshaa in the lead roles. Junga narrates the tale of a man with the same name, whose forefathers and ancestors were once lethal dons. There comes an instance when Junga decides to take up the job of being a don.

Vijay Sethupathi is in full form as Junga and it is a delight to watch him performing the sequences with utmost ease. His screen presence is terrific and the actor keeps us entertained throughout with his subtle reactions, interesting one-liners, etc. Junga's intentions to deliver a fun-filled ride, which is high on entertainment values, do hit the right chords up to an extent.

The narrative goes through the motions, too. The last time Vijay Sethupathi and Gokul came together, we got Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, a film that wanted to be zany and was filled with “humour” that seemed to have been made up as they went along. The actor and director reunite in Junga, which is more of the same. Only, the hero worship we saw in the earlier film is much more in your face.

Gokul tries to rework the magic of Idharkkue Thaane Aasaipattai Balakumara with Vijay Sethupathi and falls flat as the wry humour is missing in Junga. The film cannot make up its mind on what it wants to be: a pure dark comedy or another spoof film on Kollywood and its superstars. Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu have crackling comic timing. Sayyeshaa is the token eye-candy character, but does her scenes convincingly and dances well.

The movie is clearly helped by Gokul’s writing and Vijay Sethupathi’s performance. There are a few passing references to current socio-political situations, including the Cauvery issue, which are told in a casual, comical way that is sure to strike a chord with audience. Go with your families and friends and enjoy. Some of the dialogues will become part of regular conversation going forward.
