The moderate success of his last two movies made Ajith Kumar to be cautious about his 50th film. The actor, who had seen the fate of Vijay's 50th film Sura, went on to hear many stories and among those subjects, he showed interest towards Gautham Menon's proposed project, which was titled Thuppariyum Anand. Later, all of a sudden, the actor shelved the movie for the reasons best known to him and signed Venkat Prabhu's project Mangaatha.
Mangaatha was started with out much-hype in August 2010 without finalizing the other lead cast. Initial reports claimed that the makers of the film signed Neetu Chandra to play the love interest of Ajith Kumar in the film but later it was revealed that Trisha Krishnan was pairing up in the movie.
Telugu actor Nagarjuna was roped in to play the second fiddle but he opted out later citing date issues. Then, Arjun Sarja replaced him and other cast was finalized.
