Peranbu Story

Peranbu is a Tamil movie direction by 'Thanga Meengal' fame Ram. The movie has Malayalam mega star Mammooty, Anjali and Sadhana in the lead roles. The movie also introduced Anjali Ameer, a transsexual woman from Kerala. Yuvan Shankar Raja is composing music for this movie. Story In Detail Peranbu story revolves around a life a taxi driver (Mammotty), who stays out of city with his physically challenged daughter named Paapa (Sadhna), who gets into puberty. The family stays away from the city to avoid having a harmful effect from the city. But even there they felt that it is not safe. Amudhavan's wife Vijayalakshmi (Anjali) finds love in another person, leaving him with Paapa, who he avoided right from her birth. Paapa misses her mother too much and cannot bond with her father. An unexpected turn of events happens in their life moves them to the city life. Survival becomes too tough as Paapa experiences nature's dictates. What happens next? Is rest of the story to be watched on big the screen. Film Festivals The movie Peranbu was premiered at the 47th International Film Festival Rotterdam, Netherlands on 27 January 2018, where in the Audience Award the film was voted to 20th out of 187 films competed. The Asian premiere of the movie was at the 21st Shanghai International Film Festival, China on 17 June 2018. The movie Peranbu was also selected to be screened under the Indian Panorama category of 49th International Film Festival of India. The trailer and poster for world wide release launched on 5 January 2019. The movie released on February 1, 2019, in theatres worldwide.

Ram's creations have a uniqueness, be it in the narrative pattern or the layering of the screenplay. The movie deals with some really important issues, which we have conveniently ignored or neglected from addressing. Never in the screenplay, he has added scenes or dialogues, which are over dramatic but still they travel down deep in to your heart. Words would be less to describe Mammootty's performance as Amudhavan. The character's helplessness, confusions, doubts and love for his daughter have been conveyed with utmost perfection by the master actor. Verdict: Peranbu is indeed a masterpiece that would stay relevant even in the times to come.

Film Companion

Like Ram’s other heroes, he marches to a different beat. Or you could say he’s stubborn. When saddled with the responsibility of taking care of Paapa, he doesn’t think of special schools or therapy. There are a few — only a few — misjudged scenes in Peranbu. Say, the stretch where Meera enters Amudhavan’s house, or the ending, which is revolutionary as an idea but appears forced.

Peranbu really gets disturbing after a point. Some scenes are so raw, it is extremely difficult to shake off the shock factor. It is disturbing because the reality hits us hard and gives us an opportunity to see life from the perspective of two different personalities. It is while raising his daughter and through her eyes, Amudhavan sees the world around him differently. Sadhana, as the daughter, breathes life into the character of Paapa, and it is hard to imagine anyone else in her shoes.

Honestly, in the beginning, it's a little difficult to accept Thangameengal Sadhana as a spastic child as her movements are exaggerated and her expressions are not exactly spot on. But as the story progresses and once getting accustomed to her it is evident that the youngster has put in a huge effort to nail Paapa and can be proud of executing such a difficult role so effectively. Verdict: Go for this absolute gem and celebrate an ecstatic chapter in Tamil cinema that will find its place among the best in world cinema.

Ram's ideas are so progressive that they hit you across the face. In a scene, Amudhavan finds a companion in Vijayalakshmi (Anjali), a woman caretaker and gets married to her. In another scene, he discovers that his daughter is on period and it takes quite some time for him to come to terms with it. Peranbu is not a full-on serious film. It also has black comedy here and there to make you laugh. Baby Sadhna as a spastic child is brilliant and it is safe to say that she lives her role. Anjali Ameer and Anjali deliver memorable performances in the film.
