Kollywood director Shankar passes away

Chennai (UNI): Yesteryear Film director and editor of yesteryears, K Shankar died here last night following heart attack.

He was 80. He is survived by his wife and six children.

Born in March, 1926, Shankar began his career in Tamil cinema as an editor with the renowned film production company AVM Studios. He switched to directing films with a film in Sinhala titled ''Doctor''.

Shankar had directed more than 80 films, which included hits like ''kudiyiruntha Koil'', ''Adimaipen'' with the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who was a Kollywood celebrity, ''Gowrikalyanam'' starring the present actress turned politician, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, ''Bhookailas '', a mythological that had another actor turned politician, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao.

Some of Shankar's other hit films included devotional films like ''Thai Mookambigai'' and 'Varuvaan Vadivelan''. He was a recepient of Tamil Nadu government's Raja Sandow award.

Shankar's work also included a few films in Kannada,Malayalam and Hindi.
