We are fast approaching the end of the year 2006. Let's have a bird's-eye view of Kollywood in 2006.
A total of seventeen movies netted a profit of Rs.110 Crore for the Tamil industry. From the beginning of 2006, Kollywood began to record many achievements.
One was the successful effort in curtailing the circulation of pirated VCDs.. (Of course, there is still more to be done to totally do away with this menace.)
The state government announced many sops to the Tamil film industry like tax exemption for movies titled in Tamil. Last year, eight movies, including Chandramukhi, Anniyan, Ghajini and Sivakasi, turned out to be barn-burners. In 2006, the number of box-office hits has doubled.
In the first six months of this year, more than 40 movies were released. Small budget movies like Dishyum, Chithiram Pesuthadi, Thalainagaram, Thiruttu Payale, Kalvanin Kaadhali, Kokki, Paarijatham and Uyir became chart busters.
Movies like Imsai Arasan 23-aam Pulikesi, Unakkum Enakkum, Something Something, Thimiru, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Em-Magan, Varalaaru, E, Vallavan and Rendu earned about Rs.80 lakhs each.
The year 2006 saw more successful movies than flops.
